  1. Lollydog is right.  It is important to observe the school and see how well it follows the Montessori practices.  If you see something you are unsure about, ask then research the answer.  Often times, people mistake things that are different for something wrong without understanding the issue.  Other times, something is wrong with how they are doing things and it's time to run.

Is there something specific about Montessori you have a question on?

  2. Yeah, I'd go and check it out first, but I would recommend it. I was in Montessori school, and though I may not have learned as much data as in normal school, I developed a love for learning that has been with me ever since.(and helped me get As :P) Doing well in school is only a matter of enjoyment and effort and Montessori (at least the ones I was in) teaches that very well.

Oh, and Mattfrom... is totally right about the whole concept-before-name thing. That kind of understanding sticks with you longer and is more... comprehensible.

  3. I'm a Montessori Teacher in a Public Montessori school. Our program was started by a group of parents 12 years ago and was not understood or supported by our district  for many years. We were  told that if we didn't have enough children whose parents choose our program, the district would close our classrooms, yet at the same time we weren't allowed promote our program.  No flyers were allowed to be sent out, no websites allowed to be made, no talking to parents at different meetings. (They said that if we did any of those things that we would be taking children from the traditional classrooms and that wasn't fair to the traditional teachers.) We also weren't allowed to really explain our program.  For example, we couldn't say that Montessorians believed in multi-modality instruction because there were other teachers in our district that believed in multi-modality instruction, and by saying Montessorians believed in it we were incorrectly implying that didn't.

So in reality, the only way our program actually continued was because of the good reviews and referrals of the parents.

As far as your questions about how the children learn. I would go to montessorianswers.com It is a site that I put up this summer to help people with questions about Montessori education and philosophy.

  4. only if they are truly using the Montessori Method. Otherwise, NO.

From what I have seen at my local Montessori they are militant and they suck the joy out of being a kid. Kids will have to conform soon enough their individuality should not be squelched when it should be shining.
