  1. y did u even ask this question? magic

  2. magic because he can play any position

  3. Earvin 'Magic' Johnson.

Simply because Magic was the prime reason the Lakers had that 5 rings in the 80's. Why did I conclude Magic is the reason? Kareem never went to the Finals without Magic and Oscar, Magic went back to the finals of 1991 without Kareem proving that he can stand on his own and how effective a player he was. Compare that to Larry Bird who never went back to the finals after their Finals loss in 1987. I maybe biased since Magic is my very first NBA idol, but judging from these achievements Magic is my ultimate choice.

Magic was the pivotal player for Michigan State University's 1979 NCAA championship. Initially Earvin wanted to go to rival University of Michigan, but because the management and coaches promised him that he could have full control of the plays and the ball he opted to go to Michigan State and quickly transformed the school's fate by making them compete for the crown for the first time in years. Magic would then meet his rival Bird in NCAA's most watched Finals game, Magic would power Michigan for the win but without a valiant effort from Larry Legend the bottom line is Magic was the winner.

After arriving in the NBA, Magic would again propel the Lakers to a 60 and 22 win-loss record that in comparison to their record their previous year's record of 47-35. And we all know how he ended the 6 game struggle with Philadelphia in 1980.Not to mention this rookie getting the Finals MVP.

Bird would get his lone revenge in 1983, After Magic would collapse under pressure and Jabbar further weakening because of age, Johnson would term the series later: "the one championship we should have had but didn't get".

Johnson would exact revenge two years later in 1985, powered by Jabbar's 30.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 blocks Finals averages the lakers would claim the gold in Boston's home floor, the first time it has ever happened. 1987 was much colder as Johnson would finally close out the difference betwwen them with his now famous "junior, junior, junior sky-hook" to clinch the series Johnson would again win Finals MVP.

Johnson would win 5 championships during his prime years to Bird's 3, Magic would also win 3 NBA MVPs, 3 Finals MVPs for his career just to prove how great Magic was. And may I repeat 3 Finals MVPs in those 5 championships, now that’s what you call an achievement.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Magic, cause he play the point, rather than Bird who is a shooter who can pass

  5. magic

  6. Magic may be the best point guard ever, but without Kareem, Magic wouldn't have won as many rings if any rings.  For example, put Magic in the Utah Jazz.  See if he'll win championships.

Larry, however, was that difference maker for the Celtics.  He went in and made the Celtics into the top contender.

So building a team, I'll pick Larry and hope that Kareem won't get a teammate like Magic...

Just a note: New Orleans Jazz moved to Utah in 1979.

  7. Both are two of the greatest players ever, but you build around Magic. Not only is he playing one of the 2 most important positions on the court he also was able to play the other as you saw when he was a rookie against Philly in the NBA Championship.

Larry was an amazing player and was a far better shooter than Magic, but Magic made everyone better. Magic also revolutionized a position. Magic wins on any team he played on and so would Larry.

Also.....who won more championships? Both had HOF teammates.

Either way you are going to win a championship with these guys.

  8. What up Haloengel,

I definitely would pick Magic over Bird.  The talents of both men speak for themselves, and their ability to lead their team to victory. In their head-to-heads Magic definitely had the advantage and was able to do it in a contagious way.  i think for me that's what made Magic just (by a slight margin) that much better than Bird.  i think also Magic did so many things well that his ability to score is under-rated (especially down the stretch in the 4th quarter) during the 80s the ball would be in Magic's hand late in the game and Magic would always seem to make the right decision and the Lakers won so many close games in their championship runs spear-headed by the Magic man.  i think also his infectious smile and his passion are exciting for a city and franchise. Bird is more of a quiet leader, and in my opinion they are the best of all-time in their respective positions.

  9. Larry Bird is probably the greatest all around player in history. He would be the easiest to build around because he is so good at everything. But then again magic is also a decent rebounder. But because Bird is a god of the 3 point shot, i think he would better help spread the floor and make for easier penetration for the other guys on the floor. This seems to be a huge weakness of magic, not being able to hit a long shot consistently. So Bird, in my opinion, would be the better player to start a team with and to build around.

  10. Magic Johnson

  11. Since I am a Lakers fans I will give you a biased answer here.. I will pick Magic Johnson over Larry Bird..

  12. -I'd take Bird, it's hard to go wrong with either one, but I was always a big fan of Bird's, and hated Magic. I'll take Larry's hard work mentality and fundamentals over Magic's Showtime Razzle and dazzle type play, 7 days out the week.
