Question:

Would you rather see a try feast or a tight struggle like the RWC final?

There has been alot of negativity with the RWC final. No tries etc. I don't blame the players or the coach as they know that defence should win a game. Then again the best defence is to attack.

Had there been a try feast, crtictics would argue that there was no defence at all

  1. Both kinds of games can be exciting, but for different reasons. I guess it just depends on whether you'd like to see the physicality of a defensive game or the speed of an offensive game.

  2. A good tryfest where the defence was good but the players were better, the RWC final was desperate to watch....I almost fell asleep

  3. I actually enjoy the 80% of games in between what you decribe...

    It is not either or..

  4. As an entertainment value, the more running tries the more none rugby purists the game will attract. The maul and phase play is always great to see in a game, but frankly, the ex world champs got to the final with only twelve tries! yet NZ went out with over 40, and several other Nations over thirty.

I would be bored silly, if I was subjected to the inane style northern hemisphere teams subject their public to. S.A. had no option but to play that way if they wanted to win. Personally I think a penalty should get 1 point and a try seven. That would force the style change.

  5. Darrel, I have been thinking about a new scoring system for months now:

    Try 5 pts,

    conversion 3,

    penalty 2,

    drop goal 2

Running rugby would be rewarded more than a game plan based around kicking for field position, forcing an opposition error, (or waiting for the Wallabies to fu<k it up all by themselves ;-)), then taking the shots at goal

While I don't like England's forward dominated style of play, you have to give credit where it's due - they play it extremely well. But I agree with you, a new scoring system needs to be looked at.

Before I get shot down by the poms, it's not a case of sour grapes - you deserved to get as far as you did

  6. Totally agree with  Darrel H I was totally bored with the final

especially the aimless kicking that went on. Still SA DESERVED THEIR WIN

  7. 3 tries from each side in average would be the ideal match.

  8. I thought the World Cup Final was a very exciting game of New image Rugby.

I told a friend this and he nearly fell off his chair, but hang on a minute. The players today at the highest level are all given lap tops as part of their kit and this final showed that. It was like a game of chess except for one break by the young Pom centre who finally showed he is a classy player.

The game could have or we could say should have been played on a computor. Kick for possession, have a lineout, take it up 2 metres then kick for possession, have a lineout or scrum, then kick for possession. Get a penalty and kick for goal, (oops 3 points) restart again and away we go again.

Pretty basic actually and YES i wouldn't have mined if the All Blacks had got to the final and not scored a try but won the game. Congratulations South Africa for as hard as it is to say that after all the great games we have played against each other since about 1921.

Winning the world cup or actually winning a game of rugby is more important than the style of play played. Sport fans only love winners !!!! and us Kiwi's haven't done too well this year.

    Nobody says chess is boring.

  9. Tries. like the super 14 games.
