  1. I'm certified in German, ESL, and Music Ed (instrumental).  I have been teaching for ten years, and outside of student teaching, a few semesters of music appreciation, and helping out with the school musicals, I have not used my Music Ed at all.  When I was an undergraduate, I started out pre-law with a healthy dose of music, and when I switched to German/education, I found myself really close to having a minor in music, and in MI you have to start out certified in two subjects.  But I really don't want to be a high school band director.  Not then, and not now.  It takes a certain sort of personality and a ton of dedication.  I honestly don't have it.  I want to be able to go home to my family at a decent hour.  It takes the commitment of late nights, weekends, and summers.

The other consideration comes down to funding... I experience this as a German teacher, and I'm sure you'll get this as a music teacher, too.  When budget gets tight, these singleton teachers and electives are the first to go.  With history, you're going to have more job security.  Just a thought.

  2. Music. Because, depending on the size of the class, you will be more in touch with the student population and you will become one of them faster, thus becoming a great teacher and understanding the teenage mind a little better.

  3. Music!!!!! Actually I'm a music education major.

  4. I would rather teach history.  It's much easier to exert control over a class like that.  I like music more as a subject, but considering the amount of disrespect I've seen music teachers get from high school students, I'm kind of turned off from that career.  It is incredibly hard to discipline students in a band class, where things are noisy and chaotic.  Plus, if your students read the history book chapters and do all their work, they can acquire a good amount of knowledge from the course.  However, it's very hard to teach a music student to play his or her instrument on a skillful level.  Ultimately, they need to have the natural talent in order to succeed.

  5. Music, i think it is more fun, but then again i know a lot of schools where i live have been cutting the "allowence" for lack of  the right word (money they are allowed to spend) every year

  6. History.  People treat music teachers as a joke

  7. MUSIC!!!! I TAUGHT MY SELF HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO AND IT'S COOL CAUSE I CAN PLAY AROSMITH AND BLACK SABBATH ON MY FLUTE THANKS TO MY TEACHER.
