Question:

Would you recommend Fort Campbell, KY?

My husband is about to transfer to the Army and we need to make a list of 3 Army Bases we would like to go to. We are currently at Camp Pendleton and hate it here. We are hoping to go somewhere where the cost of living is better, the neighborhoods are friendlier, and pace of living is a little slower than it is on the west coast. Would Fort Campbell fit what we are looking for? What is it like there? Do they get a lot of snow in the winter? Are there family friendly activities like the Zoo and good camping/outdoor things near by? What are the schools like?

I'd love to hear from some people who are there or have been there recently to help us decide if this is a good first choice. (my internet searches haven't been much help.)

Thanks in advance!

  1. Request  Ft.Irwin,CA, Ft.Hood, TX or Ft.Drum, NY.

  2. WOW I can actually say for once in my life I am an expert on Fort Campbell. Been stationed their and deployed with them and loved it. Its the greatest place in the world. I loved going to nashville on the weekends. Your husband will love it

  3. I live in Clarksville, TN. My husband is stationed at Campbell and we love it.  There is lots to do in the area compared to the dinky towns off most installations.

You get all four seasons here, but the winters are pretty mild.  Not much snow.  It may snow a couple times a year, but it doesn't stay on the ground long.

Clarksville is right off post on the TN side and on the KY side the town is Hopkinsville.  That may help you research the area around post better.

Here is information on the Clarksville schools:

The cost of living is lower here in comparison to the area you are used to.  My hubby and I just bought a brand new 3 bed/ 2 bath home with 1800 sq ft. for 145,000.

If you are looking at moving off post I recomend Clarksville, TN rather than Hopkinsville, KY.  Mainly because of the size of Clarksville.

If you are looking at going to college in Clarksville there is Austin Peay State University, which is a very good school.

There really is lots to do in the area and we are only 45-60 min away from Nashville, which is a very fun city.

A few other posts you may like are Fort Louis, WA, Fort Carson, CO, and Fort Riley, KS.  I have heard great things about all three.  We considered all of them, but we are happy where we are at now!

Land Between the Lakes 30-60 min away depending on where you are going there.  It is amazing.  There is really alot to do in the area especially if you like the outdoors.

  4. Try googling Oak Grove, Hopkinsville and Clarksville KY.

Ft Campbell is about an hour north of Nashville.  Nashville has the Zoo, concerts etc, etc.

Clarksville is a good size town without being huge.  I think its very pretty there.  You get four seasons but not too much snow (I think a foot or less is tolerable).

  5. Fort Campbell is not that far from Nashville TN.
