Question:

Would you recommend Milk Snakes as a good beginner snake?

I have had a corn snake for a little over a year and have done very well with him. I have been researching Milk Snakes online and they sound pretty similar in care and temperament to corn snakes. I was hoping that breeders or hobbyists could give me a few dos and don'ts to remember when caring for my new snake -if I do decide to get one. What should I watch out for? What should I definitely know before deciding on one?

  1. Milk snakes and corn snakes are practically the same snake so if you had a corn snake then having a milksnake would be the same thing. Yes they make good starter pets!

  2. no, milk snakes are acctually quite well known for theyre bad temperment, i was thinking of getting one as my first snake, but instead i got a paraguan rainbows boa, i named him spud=)

  3. Milk snakes are a terrific snake to keep and their care is pretty much like that of a corn snake, but there is one big difference. Milk snakes are known snake eaters so you can't house them with another snake and you must make certain to wash your hands & arms thoroughly after handling one & before you handle your corn snake as the scent of a milk snake can cause great excitement in your corn snake.

  4. you have had a corn snake for a little over a year...you arent a beginner keeper anymore.  milk snakes are great snakes for any level keeper.  the care for them is about the same as for your corn snake.  there really probably wouldn't be anything that we could tell you that would be different from your corn snake.

    good luck!!

  5. lorimarto is 100% correct on this one.

  6. Corn snakes are a lot more calm then a milk snake is. If you are just really wanting a Milk snake then you may not be able to handle it a lot.

I know that's how mine was. Yours may be different. Mine was too wild, so I traded it for a Ball Python. That was one of the best decisions I've ever made. And if you want a good website to go to for care sheets and forums, go to www.repticzone.com. I hope this helps.
