There are hundreds of thousands of people who study english in Australia. I lived there for a year and have no problem speaking with Americans. (I don't have an australian accent but i do know alot of australian slang now.) Australian english is like a mix of American and British english...

You should choose a place you want to go because you will have to live there for a while.

the language is not very different at all, in fact there are only additional words used in Australia as opposed to there being different English. So I wouldn't reccommend studying it at all. The most common example is hello: "G'day" (came from good day) but using any phrases from australian english will sound funny unless you really can do the accent :P

If you like to stay in Australia, New zealand, or Tasmania, that accent perfectly fits! If not, you will face lots of problems in communicating other people speaking British or American English.

No, but I'd highly recommend that you study in Sydney.

Don't worry so much about the accent just remember...we say  PRAWNS not SHRIMP!!!
