I just had this thought, so i thought i'd ask on here.

In the sense that their making CM Punk into an under dog like Champ and they kinda did this with Bob Backlund years ago. Both are smaller than others and over come the odds. Though, Punk probably has a bit more Personality than Backlund. Its just a thought..

Just what i think, im probably wrong, do you think he is kind of like Bob Backlund?

Feel free to Disagree.

Thanks.

  1. Disagree. Backlund was a teriffic technical wrestler and CM Punk is not. They did kinda make both the underdog champion but Backlund was put over by the writers at the time where CM Punk has been constantly losing matches since he became champion. The only clean win he has had so far is the win over JBL at Summerslam. I think that his reign will be short perhaps ending at the next ppv (I think that Batista will win).

  2. Not necessarily.

Just looking at style alone, both are nowhere close to each other. CM Punk is more of a mix of styles, while Bob Backlund was strictly technical. Also, Bob Backlund did have times where he presented himself as crazy, while CM Punk is pretty mellow.

  3. YEAH CM PUNK IS SIMILAR TO BOB BACKLUND

BUT I THINK PUNK IS MORE BETTER BECAUSE

HE HAS GREAT MOVES & STYLE BACKLUND

WAS VERY BORING IN WRESTLING WORLD

BUT PUNK IS OK HE BECOMES WORLD CHAMPION

BECAUSE HE REALLY HAS TALENT HE IS NOT

LIKE BACKLUND WHO WAS JUST A WASTE OF

    TIME AND NOTHING THATS ALL

  4. I disagree only because WWF back then let Backlund wrestle his matches in the ring...he used any moves he had.

CM Punk hasn't shown everything he has in the ring, or the type of ring psychology he possesses..WWE has limited him so far.

As far as the underdog thing, I can't say because Backlund wrestled as champion before I started watching wrestling..and haven't seen many of his matches back then...

  5. I do see them as being very similar, yes.  Backlund was very "straight-edged" without ever really coming out and saying it.  He was just kind of a very straight-laced "vanilla" type of champion who DID have courage, and conviction; two traits which Punk's character also has.  I wouldn't try to compare their actual in-ring abilities; they have very different in-ring styles, but as far as personality, and how the WWE is using them, I agree 100% they are VERY similar

  6. Nah, if anyone currently on the roster reminds me of Backlund, it would have to be Finlay or Regal.

I think they're trying to make him the new Bret Hart.  The really good wrestler that is undersized, a role model, and an underdog.

I'm not sure I buy it with Punk though.

  7. yeah he reminds me off bauckland and hes kind of like raws version of rey mysterio when he was on smackdown

  8. No, I agree with a previous answer, he's more like Bret Hart. To me, if anyone is like Backlund, it probably The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin (even though he is a heel)

Punk is a great wrestler and had a five star match in ROH with Samoa Joe. WWE has watered him down considerably though.

    ROH  Punk > WWE Punk

  9. Disagree, there two styles are completely different from each other..

Backlund is more like Dave Finlay of today.

  10. Yes, I agree with you.  I am actually glad they gave the tile to Punk.  I am tired of HHH, John Cena, and Batista having the belt, all are bigger guys.  Punk is a smaller guy and is still holding the title.

I think the story line that punk ended up with is the storyline that they were originally going to give th Jeff Hardy before he got suspended just before Wrestlemania (winning MitB, Cashing it in just after NoC, JBL rivalry).  At least they got a good person to fill in the line.

(in response to "A Sports Fan" the straight edge lifestyle is not a gimmick done by WWE, that is Phillip  Brooks' real lifestyle) It is a choice alot of people in the "punk" community take

  11. no i dont sorry

  12. i agree

  13. I agree 100 percent.

  14. yah , but backland was more technical  . i dont have much to type

  15. yep.i agree with u,i starred ur question

  16. as in a loser, yes.

  17. Naa, I think they are making him more of a "New Generation" champion. You know the one that does not come to the ring dressed in the "fly suits". The one that does not brag about what he does to opponents. The one that refuses to go along with the program because he "has his own rules". Thats the gimmick that was used by Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mick Foley, Terry Funk, Eddie Geurreo, Chris Jericho, Bobby Lashley, etc. (and the list goes on and on and on).

Its kinda boring though with Punk because he does not really have much of a personality (I really think the WWE has screwed him over with this whole "clean, straight-edge living" gimmick. It obviously does not fit his style, look, or true personality.) If you want to know the truth, the only way the WWE can fix this problem is by turning CM Punk into a heel unlike anything they have ever done before. (In other words, make him turn into a real a*****e that parties hard, does drugs, and has tons of ladies.) Then after a year or so, they can have him be "saved" by a new wrestler who comes into the WWE like a savior and saves his career and life. That will allow Punk to finally be able to be the type of person that he really is. And not a "candy ***" as The Rock would say.

  18. If your talking about his 90's gimmick then I could see the similarities, but Bob was a bigger underdog because of his age.

80's Backlund To me was favored more in some of his matches, as he was All-American Bob Backlund and the crowd not only loved him, but expected him to win.

  19. how come you dont answer my q's?

and i dont think so cause punk doesnt have a clue on politics and bob blacklund will never defeat cm punk in the ring

                       _____

                        ____

                          __

  20. In a way yes he is like Backlund. But overall, I think they are different. CM Punk has more technical skills than Bob Backlund
