I'm 16 going to be 17 and I've been invited to go to LA this coming summer to work with a friend of mine who owns a clothing company, he's paying for everything and letting me stay with him, he's a very trusthworthy and good person.

I've been to LA twice before with my family, I've flown to Austin alone and to New York City alone, to work at events with this same friend, I've handled everything on my own with both those trips and I've been fine, I'm very responsible and smart.

but for some reason my parents are totally unwilling to let me go on this trip, they're being totally unreasonable won't even hear me out, they're saying it's too much for me to handle but I know they KNOW it isn't!

what do you think, do you think I could do it? and why do you think suddenly my parents are acting this way?

i'm freaking out because I really want to go.

sorry this is so long! i thought I should explain the whole situation in order to get some good feedback! :)

  1. maybe they are reacting different because they see LA as a more dangerous place?

or maybe its farther than the other two?

sit them down and explain how much it means to you to have this experience. i asume you want to work in the fashion industry? make sure to make it a point that this will give you more experience towards that. make a deal that you will call when you land and before bed every night. goodluck :)

  2. Your best bet is to ask them straight up "Why is this situation different than all the others?"  Ask them to be specific so you will understand.  Ask if there is anything you can do to change their minds.  I'm sure that they have their reasons and maybe you have missed them because you are so passionate about what you want to do.

Whether you agree with them or not, show them that you are resonsible by abiding by their wishes.  good luck

  3. When i was 17 (almost 18) i flew from New Zealand to Australia to stay with a guy for 2 weeks that i had been talking to for 6 months and had met him before in New Zealand..

I am now living with him in Australia..

I think you should be allowed to go..

  4. You are going to live with a male friend for a summer? Of course your parents are going to say no.

I'm sorry hun but I do think you are too young for this - I wouldn't let my good friends do this and they are in their late 20's. It's just not safe. They are worried about you and they care. Gosh, I know they are "just parents" to you but honestly kids who have parents who have boundaries and restrictions thank them for it in the future.  Don't put yourself in a bad situation and no matter how "pretty" you make this sound, it doesn't sound good to me - a total stranger. Imagine what yuour parents are probably thinking?

When you are 18 you can make your own decisions ( I hope you make the right one) but right now, your parents are totally responsible for you and are totally in charge of you.  Don't be foolish - stay home. Maybe when you turn 18 go with another girl friend or maybe 2 other girlfriends and get a place on your own.

LA isn't such a pretty city when you live there.

  5. so glad you shared

  6. I didn't really think much of it until you mentioned your friend is male.

    Therefore, no.

It doesn't matter whether or not your parents are being unreasonable. You're still a child and they're responsible for you. So tough cookies until you're 18.

  7. Sounds like its not the traveling that's the problem, but the fact that you'd be living with a guy for the entire summer. Okay, there is no way in h**l that my mom would let me go spend the entire summer with some dude, especially not that far away.

  8. Well, there must be a reason if they let you go before and are not letting you go now.

  9. Talk to them and ask them what the deal is. They may have other reasons that you can't go that you don't yet know about.
