I've been in band for 8 years and I play bass clarinet, so wind support won't be an issue. I just wanted to know if you think this is a quality horn, and if it would be good to start on.

  1. From what I found online, this is a four valved instrument. Most of the time, from what my director has told me, a four valve is normally closer to a professional grade instrument, which isn't really the BEST choice for a beginner. I've been playing for going on 8 years now. I started out on a Yamaha YEP 201. It's a nice horn, good tone quality. Yamahas are some of the best brass instruments out there in my opinion. You can still learn on this one, but I recommend trying a three valve first. They are also less expensive. Spending an insane amount of money on an instrument you are learning just isn't right. I just started on a four valve this year. It's fantasic.

So since I kinda went on a rant, I'll sum it up. Three valves are easier to learn on then four valves because they are smaller and require less air. Also, I highly recommend learning bass celf if you don't already know it. Since your starting out with a totally new breed of instrument, you might as well. Sometimes the better parts are written for bass celf. That's what I play and my treble clef comrade usually has an easier part. idk y tho.

Whatever you do...good luck. It's a beautiful instrument and a great starter for brass. (ps...idk bout your band but in mine there's a major rivalry between the brass and the winds. make sure they won't shun you lol (jk))

  2. the Jupiter brand is c**p. they don't have a long-lasting quality to it if you know what i mean by that. any other euphonium is good. i know this might be a bit pricey but the King brand by Conn-Selmer produces high-quality brass instruments. that's why drum corps use them. they have them regular or marching, gold-plated or silver-plated.
