My day

The following dialog happened at 8:30 a.m. while seeing

my second patient of the day. This gentleman is in the later stages

of Alzheimer’s disease. I have been assessing his response to a change in

medication unrelated to Alzheimers…

the principles are Cyn, the nurse and Jack, the patient. The dialog is verbatim.

Cyn: “Good morning, Jack. How do you feel today”

Jack: “ I feel good”

Cyn: “What are you doing today?”

Jack: “I’m looking for something I lost”

Cyn: “I hope you can find it.”

Jack: “I can’t remember what it is.”

Cyn: “You’re doing so well, I think next week will be your last visit from me.”

Jack: “That’s OK, just click your heels three times”

Cyn: “ Bye, Jack”

Jack: “Remember”

  1. Humor and sadness rolled in to one.

I never thought of scrubbing toilets in a literary sense, but it might be worth a try!

  2. Hi this is Jack, I think,.. I'm not sure... Do you know Jack?... Jack who... beanstalks, what about beanstalks... no they aren't black.. no blackjack tonight...  Jack... Jack Black... an actor... act, no but I write... I don't remember. it must not mean jack p**p... Oh, thats what I have to do... bye

    I have those days...

  3. My favorite place to work was in that Alzheimer Unit.

The journey of the mind, even in dementia is still a journey.

A lovely thought you have once again swept across the page,

I could write a book if I got started..

  4. I don't work in a field that deals with Alzheimer's....but this dialog sounds like many I have had with some of my customers. `In fact, Jack makes more sense than some of them!  I think sometimes, I'd rather do your job!!

  5. I see this happening every Tuesday. It breaks the heart.

  6. Mine certainly is.I have international students living with me.They are here to learn English.I never realized how difficult our language was until I started to help them with their studies. For example--

    around the block

    wooden block

    block the drive-way

    knock off your block

it is a challenge for me, but can you imagine how hard it is for them?

  7. "I hope you can smile each day, because the weather and the day are free" - a letter from a Dutch Person that passed through my desk at work. Sometimes it happens.

  8. I think Jack has a sense of humor - God love him. You certainly have a job where each day - each patient - can be a surprise. No hum-drum existence for you ♥

  9. Ha Ha! I read to the folks every Wednesday morning, after exercise. They like my Webster's Dictionary of Quotations.

  10. Not even close.....Another of your moments in time....Freeze them CS

  11. Rich in the humor and pathos of life. My job is teaching and tutoring and sometimes, even teaching literature / poetry.  That I suppose would qualify.  I could tell you some stories that would shock and dismay you, or amuse you, depending on your mood, but the names of the innocent have been changed to protect their identities...
