  1. I'm just an American so what do I know .

.. but somebody should tell the supporters of that petition that England does not award posthumous knighthoods.  They never have.   It would depart completely from the tradition from which knighthoods arose.

In any case, if England *really* wanted to give Charles Darwin the highest possible honor you could bestow a British scientist, they would bury Darwin in Westminster Abbey right next to Isaac Newton.   Oh .. wait.   That's precisely what they did!

  2. Sure. From what I understand, a knighthood is awarded  for "recognition of exceptional achievements or services to Britain," which Darwin certainly contributed to (not to mention science in general). If Mick Jagger was knighted based on this, why not Darwin?

  3. Labsci, it would add 'Sir' to his name.

I think I've made my point.

  4. Absolutely.

  5. A knighthood would be a step down from the recognition Darwin has already achieved for his work and contribution to science. Why cheapen it?

It would add nothing to his name.
