i wuld prefer a river due to more room, deeper, but if your afraid of the "dirty water" than just stick to a pool...

I would - and have - swim in either.  Swimming in a river is much different from a pool because of the current.  In the river I more or less played in the water and didn't do laps like one can in a pool.
