Question:

Would you switch jobs if you were me?

I have worked for the same company for over 5 years (now a Manager). I have been offered a job that pays pretty much the same the difference is that it is entry level (and it is hourly). There are very limited opportunities for me to move up in my current company (someone would have to quit or I would have to move to another state). The company I am in now offers an annual bonus, but it depends on how the company does overall (not very good right now). The new job does not offer a bonus in the entry level position. I work about 50 hours a week and I am mentally drained. I know the new job will be less stressful. There are other things that I have to deal with at my current job (horrible supervisor, no one is respectful, company setting unrealistic goals, plus much much more) that I hope this new job will not have. What would you do?

  1. Work-life balance is important, and it seems 50 hours a week is affecting that negatively.  Since you are not willing to relocate, and you want a better opportunity, starting with another company is not a bad idea.  No one should be afraid to get involved in something new; it is exciting though nerve racking.  Make certain that the new company can help you achieve your goals that you have set for yourself.  My only recommendation is the economy is somewhat sketchy right now, and if you are going into a company that may face lay offs, you would be the first to go.

If lay offs are not a concern, then go for it and don’t look back.
