The 2008 earth hour was such a success. Thank you all those people who turned off their lights.

"2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses in Sydney shut off lights and appliances, resulting in a 10.2 per cent reduction in local carbon emissions during that hour." - cbc news

This was just in Sydney too. After reading this, it makes me wonder why we do not have it every month? Would you do it if it was once a month?

  1. I do it every day.  Do you think I'm an idiot?  I turn lights on when I need them and off when I don't.  There are plenty of hours every day when I'm not using lights.  It saves money.

Not turning lights on for an hour is eqivalent to not eating meat for an hour, i.e., not remarkable in the least.

  2. Sadly, Sydney's population grows by about 1,000 people each week. So turning the lights of for an hour a year or an hour a month seems somewhat futile in the scheme of things. Ask you local MP why the government refuses to have any official policy on Population yet they're happy to pay people to produce babies.

  3. In the middle ages, they didn't even have electricity. Imagine how low their emissions were!

  4. I do it every day. I am trying to cut my families usage by at least 50%.

  5. I would do it once a month. I have no problem doing it, especially if its saving the planet.

  6. we all should turn off the light in our house for one hour a day every day that would save lot of carbon emissions

    not one hour a year

  7. I turn my lights out but it not for a cause. I like the night and think that more people should get to know it, especially kids. It was a big part of my life when I was young living in the country where the summer skies were pitch black and the milky way lit up the sky. There was more fun in doing things under star light, where imaginations ran wild. Its awesome.

As far as the carbon emissions, I am sorry to say that the cause is not what its made out to be. CO2 is not causing global warming, and the backers of the event know this, and they are doing this for money and power.

Enjoy the night, and the stars, but do not be fooled by these charlatans whom claim that turning your lights out is in anyway saving our environment.
