Would you want to stop a hurricane?

If the technology was available, money was not an issue, etc., do you think we should stop hurricanes? I particularly want to hear from those that live in hurricane-prone areas or those who have experienced a hurricane directly. My husband and I live in central Florida and have been living through Tropical Storm Fay. I hear people say they wish there was a way to stop or break up a hurricane so it doesn't destroy people's homes and property. My personal view is that hurricanes are a GOOD thing. Even though we own our home and have a lot on the line should things get really bad, I am actually relieved when a hurricane comes through because it is SO good for the environment. It gets on my nerves when people complain about their homes being flooded. Believe me, I would not want my OWN home to be flooded or destroyed and do not wish that tragedy on anyone but, at the same time, these people move into beautiful homes....RIGHT ON THE BEACH OR WATERWAY!!! These homes are developed in an area nature had created as a way to store excess water during hurricanes and any storm for that matter. People and developers want homes in these areas because the area is beautiful but then they want to cry and get people's sympathy when their homes get destroyed. When will those who live here in Florida learn? Another thing that really ticks me off is that these same people also complain when they have alligators swimming in the flood waters. HELLO?!?!?! You are in THEIR territory!! By the way, my husband and I live in a 60-year-old home in inland Florida. So, after all my ranting and raving (can you tell my stress level is maxed out?? LOL), would you stop a hurricane if it was possible to do so? Why or why not?

  1. I would not.  Hurricanes are part of the natural processes that nature uses for energy balance on the Earth.  Hurricanes transfer a significant amount of excessive heat energy from the surface into the upper atmosphere, thus keeping the surface cooler than it would be otherwise.  Take hurricanes away, and nature would have to find some other way to restore balance, or the surface would warm.

Tropical systems are also great drought denters/busters.  Many times the Gulf coast region gets into major drought conditions, and a tropical system's copious rains are just the ticket to significantly alleviate the effects of long term drought.

  2. There is no way in living h**l I would stop a hurricane. Even though I live in New York City, I have studied hurricane patters and hurricane mitigiation for a project I did, and I might carry on that project again in the future. Gosh, I wish there were more people that think like you that live along the Atlantic and Gulf states where they get hit by a lot of tropical storms and hurricanes.

I have studied numerous housing trends and Florida happens to be the state where the most people tend to keep moving into areas right next to the coast. And then when a storm hits, all of these homes keep on being destroyed, but yet people rebuild them and more people move in for the ocean view. And also, I love how people in Florida were caught offguard with Fay. If you know the least bit about tropical storm, they cause damage not because of wind, but they do so with extreme flooding and tornados. Tropical storms are known for the amounts of rain they drop in an area, especially in inland areas. Besides, statistically, 59 percent of hurricane/tropical storm deaths are caused by inland flooding.

Unfortunately, I don't know what it will take to realize that nature was here first and to leave nature alone. That is why, when I get my own house, I don't care what animals are around, and I always give them their due space. You should see what is happening in my neighborhood now. People in New York City know nothing about hurricanes, and in my neighborhood, they are building tall buildings where the outside is all glass windows that are gigantic, and now the city wants to build more housing in areas that will get the most damage from a hurricane strike. In almost every neighborhood now that is along the shore, developers want to put in gigantic apartment buildings so that way people can get a nice view of the waterfront and the skyline. But, those people are going to pay dearly when New York city gets hit with a hurricane.

Overall, hurricanes are a necessary part of nature. They help to relieve areas with droughts, help with natural erosion, and most importantly, they help to keep this planets climate in balance. WIthout hurricanes, our climate will go all over the place and I don't want to see what would happen if people were stupid and tried to stop hurricanes.

I'm sorry for the long reply but this topic does get me going and I think measures are needed to stop too many people from living in areas where hurricanes cause a lot of damage. Besides, the more people that live in those areas, when a storm hits, it will take a lot longer to rebuild and a lot more funds will be needed. If a hurricane like Andrew were to hit florida right now, the damage total will be at least 200 hundred billion dollars.

Take care and I really love you for realizing the truth in this issue! You really deserve a gold medal!

  3. 1. If yu stop it, weer will yu park it?

    The enerjee gotta go sumweer.

    2. wen mi hous krash & bern, I dont kall that good.

  4. I agree in the most of the parts with you.

The storm as any thing can be stop and we have the technology to that in a few years or even now.

The storms are good for the environment as so do any natural event like   fire it is basically a rejuvenation process for the nature.

But some massive storms I think should be stop when are threaten people life's, sometimes nature takes what it gives (life).

So why we don't stop the big storms?

we can't (I don't know about that). If we can should people find out that.

And not all storms are good for the nature.

  5. No, nature was here before humans. If we didn't have storms the whole worlds climate would get completely out of balance and the results could be possibly catastrophic. I think Hurricanes are beautiful, and its the human races fault for population area's where they are liable to strike. If we made a machine to stop rain here in England (which I can tell you, a lot of people would adore) the country would die because the enviroment wasn't being nurtured enough.

Nature has been here a lot longer than technology and I think we should respect that as human beings. (:
