BOSTON - The state Senate has approved a bill that would allow aspiring teachers who flunk the certification test three times to possibly teach anyway.

The law would provide a waiver that could lead to certification,

The teaching candidates who failed three times would have to have come close to passing at least once.

Senate Republicans ridiculed the legislation, which still needs approval from the House and Governor Patrick.

Senator Bruce Tarr asked how the state can expect students to have a minimum level of knowledge when they don’t expect the same from teachers.

But Senate Democrats said it would just allow teachers to be assessed on a broader basis so talented instructors aren’t denied jobs.

  1. Proof once more that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

  2. It has nothing to do with education or children.

It has everything to do with Big Government, and the NEA.

    and Liberal Politics.

No state deserves this more than Mass.

  3. Well since what are doing now isn't really working, what the h**l! cant get much worse. It'll still look bad on resumes I'd assume so good schools will still have good teachers.

  4. Teachers who can’t pass the test might be able to teach say study hall or phys ed class!  But seriously there is another side to this question about intelligence.  Consider this:

Ted Kaczynski, The “Unabomber”, earned a bachelors degree from Harvard then went on to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor to earn a Masters and PhD. He was one of the smartest people around but had no people skills whatsoever. His IQ was over 170. He went on to teach for awhile at UC Berkeley but became disenchanted and quit because he could not relate to the students. From there on it was all down hill for him.

Ken Lay, architect of the Enron debacle graduated from the University of Missouri then earned his masters and PhD from the University of Houston.  This very smart robber baron swindled thousands of people out of their life savings while pocketing tens of millions of dollars for himself.  The economy took a giant dip and California is still trying to bail itself out of debt from the deregulation of the energy industry.

Being smart is not the only thing to consider when hiring a person for any job.

  5. No, I would not want my child taught by teachers who flunk out.  As a matter of fact, I will homeschool my child from now on.

  6. Certainly there are lessons to be learnt.

  7. Interestingly, Massachusetts is still the best educated state in the US.

  8. Gotta love the Teacher's Union and the Democrats!!!  Education has gone down hill incredibly fast in the last 30 years.  We pour money into education like it's a bottomless pit, and education just gets worse, and they keep screaming for money.  All the while these educators are dumbing down our kids.

We need to make all schools private for profit institutions.  Then only the good ones would survive and the bad ones would disappear.  As soon as anything becomes government run its quality deteriorates and it all falls into the crapper.

  9. wow that is sad.....Teachers should be selected like NBA players in the draft and paid just as well

  10. There are a number of factors at play here.

There is a shortage of teachers and states have raised their standards. A teacher might be highly skilled in English but be terrible at math, so maybe they're not passing the math tests.  Then there are teachers who are excellent at math or science but can't pass the English essay test.  Still, public schools and state certification departments are tougher than many private schools require.  some private schools require nothing more than ability to preach the Bible.  Now you may say that students in private schools do better, but private schools can pick and choose their students and kick out ones that are causing trouble, while public schools give some very wild kids a lot (too many I think) of chances.

A Republican tactic that has been used to bring in competition to American teachers is to recruit teachers from other countries.

These can be very good teachers who know their subject matter, but maybe they have trouble passing the English parts.  As to those of you who blame the teachers' unons and say there's already enough funding, all I can say is go try to be a teacher in this increasingly wild society. You don't have a clue.
