Would you willingly live in a virtual world?

Supposing that you were presented with the option to download your brain into a virtual world which possessed identical sensory qualities to the real world, would you do it?

Assume that this virtual world allows you all the advantages of modern day internet and then some. That is, you can look like whoever and whatever you want to, you can never unintentionally die, you can know anything you search for, and you can have access to whatever material possessions you desire. Oh, and you can FLY (and shoot laser beams or whatever the crazy kids do on games nowadays). Assuming that the technology is advanced enough, you can still visit the real world by inhabiting a cloned simulacra of yourself that has its brain linked to the virtual world.

But you can never have your real body back.

Would you do it?

  1. I'm about 100 pages from finishing a 4-book series entitled "Otherland" that covers this exact premise.

No thanks.   I like the real thing with all its flaws.

  2. No.  I'd be giving up all that human

beings are.  The daily routine, what

makes them tired, hungry, sad, the

    pain, and joy.

  3. it will be boring, no challange. no good vs evil. Boring perfectness

  4. obsoleted technologies u still want to show off to pple? lol..

  5. I already did. So did you, don't you remember?

Unfortunately, they didn't want us to stay in here forever, so our bodies decay within a couple of decades, and then we gotta go back out into the "real" world. Ah well, at least I'll get to see my dog again.

  6. *** U ME.  Never assume  You are intimating that I have an unreal body?

    Peace.

  7. It would depend. I would only do it if all my family and friends would do it. And, I would only do it if this new virtual world had complete peace.

  8. When the alternate reality is so much better than the real one, what cause is there not to?

In a world where this was possible, who would remain to maintain the functionality of the virtual world?

  9. sure but not use it all the time ill be like dead in real life and all just waisting my life on something that isnt real

  10. no

..........somebody's been watching too much matrix

  11. i want to dream but i don't like to live in a dream. i want to make my dreams come true. if i accept that ( to live in a virtual world) that is mean i am a weak man. we have to live the life as it whether it is happy or sad and we have to change it to be better not only for us but for others around us, and for our children.

we give the meaning to the life not the versa.

  12. Dunno :)

  13. I would.  Life would become more interesting.

  14. You mean we're nnnnnnnnnnnot, Mr. Anderson?

  15. No. I like the truth and being in touch with reality. Some things like having a working body and a sound mind are priceless. I would never give that up.

  16. i love being real and alive; no way in h**l would i choose to live in that kind of world :/

  17. Not with the current state of technology.  There are far too many system glitches.  Try playing Second Life and you'll find out what I mean.
