  1. Absolutely.  It is a way of giving back to your community and getting some experience in the process.  I bet you will meet nice people there and I would rather work there than in some of the higher end shops.

  2. yes, why not? i love charity shops. if i worked in one i would get all the good bargains first!

  3. Funny, I thought I was now...oh, you mean a real charity, not just a job that does not pay market wages.

I actually did in another life.  It is tough work with few tangible rewards and it takes a special person with a very grounded sense of reality to work there.  Would I go back again?  Probably not because I have been frustrated by the actual lack of forward progress that most of the shops make and the enormous costs involved.  There has to be a better way to do it, but I cannot figure out what that way is.

If you are looking to join an outfit, be prepared for long days and serious disillusionment.  You will not be "saving a child" you will be doing boring paperwork.  If you are lucky enough to get into the field, it will make your most rugged camping experience seem like a weekend in a posh hotel by comparison.

This is not to say that I do not volunteer.  I do, quite a bit, but in areas where I can make a positive difference and it is "tangible."  But then, I don't have the right temperament.

  4. Absolutley.  I know that there are people benefitting from the shops and that's a very good thing.  I know of one nearby that donates profits to cystic fibrosis, which is the charity I raise money for.  I have seen amazing results from the money donated to the cystic fibrosis foundation...my ten year old cousin in living a much better life because of their work and dedication...so yes...definitely.

  5. Yes I would but it should be volunteer definately not work if you're doing anything for charity it shouldn't be paid work (as some people can be) it should be exactly what it says on tin & charity work

  6. I did work in a charity shop four years ago it was a way to meet new people and get out of the house.

  7. no because people i know might see me in there...charity shops are DISEASED

  8. If it was oxfam I'd feel guilty charging poor folks who can only afford second hand clothes such high prices.

  9. Why not?

I volunteered in a charity shop for about 8 months.

Was the best time i ever had. The people were great and easy-going, you could have a laugh with people and still get your tasks done.

I learned a h**l of a lot from working there which i believe i wouldn't have learned anywhere else.

Other than helping out for good causes, you're also getting something out of it yourself. Whether it be confidence, experience, or whatever.

I only left there because i was ill, if i could help it, i'd still be there!

  10. I arranged with a local charity shop for my son, who is autistic, to do some voluntary work there. It was a great experience for him and the staff were very supportive without being over protective. He did that every saturday for 6 months and thoroughly enjoyed it as well as developing some new skills.

  11. Absolutely yes!  They help in so many good ways.  Many charities ahve contracts to help victims of disasters and give the clients free clothing and furniture to start their lives over again.  It is a great way to provide jobs for the community and people can afford the prices when they have very little funds but need things.  It is a win/win situation on all sides,.
