Wouldn't it be a good idea for those who excel in martial arts to participate in competitions like basketball?

1. Those martial artists can just fly to the basket with the ball using Qing Gong.

2. It would bring them a lot of money since those basketball stars earn tons and tons of money. Moreover, with martial arts/gong fu, they wouldn't be hurt since they would use Qing Gong to fly to the basket and score with almost no contact with the opponents.

If what I said are logical and sound, why wouldn't those martial artists participate in such competitions? Is it against the rule (to use martial arts/gong fu in such games?

See this for examples of Qing Gong (it is a 40-episode video; just click on any of the pictures to view that episode)

Of course, those people in the drama aren't necessarily martial artists; they are just (Chinese) actors and actresses. However, how did they do that in the drama if they know nothing about martial arts? Even if they are tied to some invisible strings when they are performing kong fu's like Qing Gong, how did they perform their sword skills if they are just pure actors and actresses? Those (especially Linghu Chong's Dugu 9 swords) look so cool to me!

Please clear those mysteries to me. Thanks!

  1. Because martial arts is combat, not jumping around looking all kung-fu and god-like. Martial arts is exaggerated in popular culture, they can't actually do most of the things they're shown to do on TV.

I am a martial artist and I can't do any of this Qing Gong stuff, neither can anyone else at my martial arts school. We're taught to fight, straight-up punches and kicks, not to jump around like idiots.

  2. Next time you run into one of "those martial artists" why not just ask him/her?

BTW: Don't confuse martial arts with folklore.

  3. 1. Martial arts doesn't teach you how to shoot, play defense, work your feet properly, shoot accurately, avoid fouls, or use your teammates.

    2. I liked the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, too. But it's just a movie.

  4. Qing Gong is a myth.

The reason why actors and actresses can perform those 'feats' so deftly is because each of their movements is choreographed by a martial arts expert (ie. Yuen Woo-ping). They then spend countless hours practicing each movement until the sequence comes together perfectly, like a big dance sequence in a musical.

Just look at 'The Matrix'. None of the cast members had the slightest idea about martial arts before they started filming. But because they practiced their choreography so intensely, they were able to make it seem as if they were martial arts experts.

  5. I think you need to bone up on the law of inertia.
