Wouldn't it be better if people worked together to reform adoption practices?

I think instead of bashing each other on here it would be better for all to work together in getting changes made to make it a better situation for all involved. I think all know there are changes that should be made in the system. But instead of bashing each other because you don't like someone or their answers wouldn't it be better to ban together and try to fix some of the problems?

  1. Yes, that would be wonderful, what's the plan

  2. sure, i'd love to work with you!

I'm about to launch a writing campaign to the US legislators want to join?

Or you can check us out at the protest and come along and join us there too! we're going to have a week of activities depending on how long you stay :)

Or if you have some more ideas i'm absolutely willing to listen and if I agree i'll jump on the bandwagon and help you out. :)

  3. Yes, and how will YOU be helping?  There is a protest being organized for July 22, 2008 in New Orleans.

Why not donate some money, seeing that you're eager to help.

    Here's the site:

Thanks in advance for your help.

  4. philosophical disagreements do not necessarily mean people can't find a middle-ground.  so i do agree with you.

however, there are vast differences in the members of the triad and their contribution, social support and power in the system.  in other words, you have some groups that benefit from the current structure (monetarily, politically, socially protected, et al); and the other side who do not benefit (usually young, poor, socially stigmatized, educationally and politically marginalized) .  hence, there is benefit to some groups in NOT changing the structure. that's what makes reform problematic and challenging.

so i think until we can address and equalize the power and support structure of those involved in adoption, collective reform is difficult.

yet, i am a huge believer in grass-roots advocacy.  so although i can't get to new orleans in july (i will have just delivered) i plan to send a donation.  your turn...

  5. Uhh Dude? Look around you. There are tons of amazing people here who are all trying to reform adoption. Adoptive parents, potential adoptive parents, adoptees (reunited, searching and those with no desire to search) as well as natural parents (reunited, searching and with no desire to search). Some of us have our own little cliques outside of yahoo where we go to talk about our specific ties to adoption and much of the reform talk is centered there. All you need to do is poke through old questions to see how hard the people here are working to make the system better for all the people involved.

  6. I'm not sure what you're asking.  I don't think disagreement and helping one another are mutually exclusive.  I think we can work together for reform without having to agree with or even like each other.

I happen to think a lot of the folks involved with certain animal rights groups are unrealistic and silly.  But I still donate to local shelters and encourage others to get a shelter dog instead of buying a puppy.  Shared goals don't have to mean shared world views, do they?
