And maybe planes, too, but that seems even less possible.

I'm traveling from California to Pennsylvania with Amtrak this holiday season, and I'm going to have my laptop with me... I was just thinking how cool it would be to have the Internet during that time!

  1. Actually, the ACE Train (Altamont Commuter Express) has been experimenting with it for their ~90 mile run.

CALTRAIN has tried it, but stopped the project 3 months ago.

It's a HUGE investment in equipment and infrastructure... approximately $125K per mile

  2. They will, eventually.

  3. Come to the UK where many already have this facility!

  4. It really would be!

I'm from Dallas, and there's a commuter rail line called the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) from Dallas to Ft. Worth that plans to put in wi-fi on the line soon.

It would definitely help those commuters that are working even when they sleep. They could do part of their work on the way there. And, not to mention, just other people that would like to surf the `Net instead of staring out the window.

  5. Oh heck yeh! I travel LA to Albuqueque a lot on Amtrak and if they did that, the airlines would lose so much money! I could work, not wait in lines, sleep in a bed and wake up in ABQ and not have to collect bags from claims.

  6. Wifi is fitted (and free) on all national express east coast trains. It's also available between London and Brighton on Southern. Cross Country are planning to fit it to their fleet too.

the nxec system works via satellite and GPRS/3G. When there is no satellite signal it uses Mobile Data networks. This system requires no lineside equipment but can be very slow if using the mobile phone networks

  7. Wi Fi is available in Britain on trains using the main line between London Kings Cross, Newcastle, Leeds, York and Edimburgh operated by National Express East Coast. Some other operators are introducing this facility too

  8. Ya sure...if it makes your day better, I am good with it.

  9. Yes, that would be cool!  It would certainly make the time go by faster.  Anyway, have a safe trip!

  10. Wi-Fi is completely retarded. The 8-track for the 2000s
