Wouldn't this be a simple end to the 'hamburger origin' debate?

Basically it's between Charlie Nagreen of Seymour, Wisconsin and, the Menches brothers of Hamburg, New York. They both claim to have 'invented' the dish at their respected county fairs in 1885. Couldn't you just go by the date of the county fairs and declare that person(s) the inventor of the hamburger?

  2. no not realy

  3. Not really, because it is named after the German port city of Hamburg... where people were buying Hamburg Steak about 100 years before 1885. It was a mixture of ground beef, spices and breadcrumbs/filler and was often eaten with bread. If you're looking for the first person, in America, to sell hamburger/hamburg steak with bread then you could go by the dates... but it's not really an event worthy of an 'origin debate' is it?
