Wout Poels recovering after the Tour de France crash
After spending most of the season hospitalised, Wout Poels finally started practicing and is hopeful to continue his form, from where he left before the Tour de France crash.
The cyclist underwent a minor surgery to his kidney this week and is now feeling pretty confident to be back in action.
“Today I am made wireless!" he joked on Twitter.
On Wednesday, he was once again able to train following a long recovery.
"I have long looked forward", Poels told De Telegraaf. "This is very nice." The Dutchman recognised however, that he has a long way to go.
"I am again very bottom of the ladder," he continued. "Step by step, my doctors say I can get back to my old level."
The cyclist is now hoping to get back in the peloton as soon as he can and is interested to continue things from where he left, the Tour de France.
"The Tour de France is in my mind. It would be nice to be able to participate at L'Alpe d'Huez".
He crashed during the stage 6 of the Tour de France and was immediately taken to the local military hospital in Metz.
The cyclist was diagnosed with bruised lungs, three broken ribs and a rupture spleen and kidney.
Poels was holding the 20th overall position after the stage 5 classifications and was looking good to make an impression in the coming stages of the race.
He was a pre-race favourite for the young rider classifications but all his efforts went down the drain when he found himself on a hospital bed after the stage 6.
Wout was not the only cyclist affected by the crash and as many as 100 riders were involved in a massive pile up which occurred in the final 30 kilometres of the Tour de France stage 6.
The 24-year started the 2012 season on a high note and was impressive with his several top performances in the first half of the season.
He secured the second overall position at the Tour de Luxembourg along with the young rider classifications and a stage 3 victory at the race.
Poels secured the third overall position at the Vuelta a Murcia and eighth overall at the Tirreno-Adriatico along with the young rider’s jersey at the race.
The Dutch is a promising young talent and his return to professional cycling will definitely help the sport in the years to come.
