  1. The USA is the great melting pot.  People came here from all nationalities and cultural backgrounds.  They came speaking many different languages.  Most people adapt to English, but many still speak in their native language - which could be anything.  We don't have a national language just like we don't have a national ethnicity or a national religion.  We're a conglomerate of the rest of the world.

  2. im born and raised american and im retired from the united states

marine corps infantry and have served this country in both war and peace! the offical lanquage of the USA is english!

stay out of walmart, and alot of big cities

  3. Because we are too stupid to even learn proper English!

  4. I've been out of school way to long to remember American History but weren't we originally under British rule?  They speak English.

  5. We don't have one because the Democrat Party is dead set against it. Why? Because of multiculturalism. "Let us not often others".

English should be the official language. It is the dominate language throughout all the world and the USA as well.

  6. Because we are a melting pot and there are so  many people coming here from different countries we cannot just pick one, so we dont have a offical language so we dont have to choose one, And just about the same amount of people speak Spanish in the U.S than english speakers.

  7. I think that's what keeps the USA unique. No preference to a single identity. Everyone has their own. Although English is widely spoken, Spanish is becoming mainstream too with almost 13 million Spanish speakers in the country and counting. After all, your freedom to choose,  Isn't this what all democracy's all about?

  8. The official language is English .There have been stalwart patriots who wanted to  declare linguistic independence and call their language American. The U.S.A., did shake up the English language which was stagnating especially around Victorian times. I think it would be fair to say that we all speak American English to a greater or lesser extent. Addition.Whilst English has never been declared the legal official language of the U.S.A, it a "De Facto" official language as all laws, legal matters and official statements are in English. The majority of the population speak English and this should be standardised. To suggest that  a country like the U.S.A, does not or should not to have a standard/common language is totally ridiculous. Imagine, large sections of the population not being able to read or comprehend the laws of the land. Not being able to converse with each other. Take a battle  scenario were the participating U.S, combatants could not understand each other. Honestly children save your romantic ramblings for the classroom.

  9. because we are not ready for it yet. they are too many people that come from different cultures and already know many languages.

  10. English 82.1%, Spanish 10.7%, other Indo-European 3.8%, Asian and Pacific island 2.7%, other 0.7% (2000 census)

note: Hawaiian is an official language in the state of Hawaii

  11. It's important to note that although the Federal Government has no official language, many of the state governments have declared english the official language...
