Wozniacki and Sharapova want year-end championship to be played at O2 Arena – Tennis News
Former and reigning World No.1, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki, respectively have desired to shift the Women Istanbul year-end event to the most elite tennis arena in the world in London, O2 Arena. They wanted the place
to be shifted so that they could compete alongside men’s ATP World Tour Finals and it will be me much more fascinating if men and women contest together at the same place, same time.
Russian World No.4, Maria Sharapova, said “It would definitely be nice to see. I think that would be a lot more fun for the fans to see the men and women together." She was talking to the media reporters during the Istanbul tournament.
For the time being the women year-end final is to be stage at the most scintillating places on Earth in Sinan Erdem Arena, Istanbul until 2013. The desire of leading women tennis icons can push the officials to think about this
later but apparently there are no changes to be made to the scheduled events in coming years.
Sharapova further added that it would be a major problem for the officials to schedule the tournament if men and women both play at the same time but considering the fact that men’s season is almost a month longer than women, it
will be a good opportunity to equalise the tenure of season for both genders. Currently the women schedules are pretty far off than men.
Men have a little more break before their finals and it gives them a slight edge over women to prepare themselves. Playing together would be great if both groups contest their matches together at the same place.
Caroline Wozniacki had same thoughts as Sharapova and she wanted to transfer the venue of their year-end finale to London as well. She said “I think we have some very good players and some very big names, as well. I know they have
obviously Rafa and Roger and Novak and Murray really dictating most of it, but at the same time you can just see out there today we also have a lot of fans coming and watching us."
Danish World No.1 also added that she wanted to see all the Grand Slam titles played together as well just like Miami and Indian Wells. She wanted to have year-end championships in combined fashion as well but was also concerned
at the fact that there calendar and men’s calendar doesn’t match at all. It will require a lot of changes that will not be easy at all.
