Wozniacki edges closer to World Number 1
20 year old Danish player Caroline Woznaicki is, for the time being, World Number 2 on the Women’s Tour Association rankings, but that may change soon. The young tennis player has made some brilliant strides in the past year or so, and she may well overtake
Serena Williams to take the coveted World Number 1 position as her own within this week.
Last week, Caroline Wozniacki won her fifth WTA Tour tournament victory of the year 2010. She emerged as the champion at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where she was a first seed. She received a bye in the first round, and went on to defeat players
Greta Arn, 16th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 8th seed Victoria Azarenka and in the final, Elena Dementieva, who was seeded 7th at the tournament.
The right handed player also reached the finals of last year’s US Open tournament. In addition to this, she scored victories against Chelsey Gullickson, Kai-Chen Jang, Yung-Jan Chan, 14th seed and former World Number 1 Maria Sharapova and Dominika
Cibulkova at the 2010 US Open, before falling to seventh seed Vera Zvonareva in the semi finals in straight sets.
Wozniacki seems to be on the fast track for the World’s top position. She edged a little closer to the monumental achievement with her success at the 2010 Toray Pan Pacific Open, and if she manages to reach the quarter finals or better at this week’s tournament,
the top position will be a cinch for 20 year old Wozniacki. She herself states, however, “I don’t really think about the ranking. I think about the match I’m playing at the moment. Right now I’m just enjoying my victory from yesterday. I’ll have to focus on
the next tournament, but I still just want to enjoy the moment.”
Nevertheless, all she requires for this feat is two more victories at the WTA Beijing event. Her next opponent is World Number 40 Sara Errani, who managed a position in the second round by defeating wild card Shuai Peng in a three set upset. One of Wozniacki’s
main advantages in this match is Errani’s well known problem with hard court surfaces (she was comfortably defeated by Vera Zvonareva at the Toray Pan Pacific Open last week). Some may argue that Errani has a career win record over Wozniacki, but their last
match was two years ago, and in that intervening gap, Wozniacki has undeniably made more progress.
The young Dane seems to be somewhat tired of her tennis schedule after this season, however, and has taken up boxing to help her training. Although she also looks forward to a hard earned and well deserved break, she does not intend to quit, saying, “When
it gets hard going during practice and I feel like quitting, I think about having the trophy in my hand, and that is just a great feeling. I only have two more tournaments left this year and then I’ll have my holidays. I am just looking forward to that.” If
Caroline Wozniacki performs this week, she may have something besides the end of the season to celebrate.
