Wozniacki endured a shocking defeat whereas Zvonareva won her group match in Doha
The current world number one from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki endured a thrashing defeat against the Australian ace tennis star Samantha Stosur at the Women Tennis Association Champions tennis event which is being held in Doha, Qatar.
In a very recent maroon group match of the WTA Champions the twenty six year old Australia veteran proved to be a bit too tough for the world number one Dane as she clinched a marvellous straight sets victory against the current world champ.
The loss in the second game of the maroon group is no doubt very disappointing for Wozniacki as she had to win the game to end the season on the number one spot. It is to be noted that the defeat of Wozniacki in the tournament has opened a window of opportunity
for the current world number two Vera Zvonareva to usurp the world title from the twenty year old Dane.
In the match Wozniacki tried her luck but failed to give a very strong challenge to the Aussie and on the other hand Stosur showed her outrageous form pretty bluntly and settled the two setter game victoriously by 6-4 and 6-3.
On the other side of the tournament the twenty six year old Russian and current world number two saw off her veteran rival in a straight set match against Victoria Azarenka. The victory has moved Vera closer to the world number one title now and that is
why the recent victory against the Belarusian has given her a very strong boost.
In the match Zvonareva faced some outrageous challenges from Azarenka. Zvonareva seemed pretty out of touch but kept her head brilliantly to clinch the victory after a stamina jolting battle of tennis.
The white group match of the tournament was very exciting as both the tennis veterans gave each other a hard challenge. Vera served really well during the match and displayed some brilliant aces. Zvonareva was down in the first set but managed to win a tie
break point and later smashed some remarkable serves and snatched the first set from Victoria mercilessly.
The brilliance of Vera brought frustration for Azarenka and she started to make mistakes. In the second set of the match Zvonareva was again down by a point but proved her great dedication and class by recovering well. Vera won the battle against Azarenka
by 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
It is to be remembered that the twenty six year old Azarenka has to win the tournament to usurp the world number one rank from Caroline Wozniacki. With the way Vera is performing in the tournament it is very possible for her to grab glory.
Elsewhere, in the same group the twenty eight year old Belgian tennis star and former world number one Kim Clijsters saw off her Serbian rival Jelena Jankovic. It was a pretty convincing victory for the current world number four Clijsters as Jelena seemed
completely out of strength. Jelena has been suffering from a sinus problem and in her recent interview she said that she was not perfectly fit to play and gets out of breath very quickly.
The match was Clijsters’ first match after the New York Open Grand Slam and the victory against the Serbian has given her a lot of mental strength for upcoming crucial matches. The Belgian displayed some great forehand shots and remained dominant throughout
the match.
After the match Clijsters expressed her thoughts about her performance and told the media that she was playing after a long time and her performance in the match was pretty satisfactory. Clijsters added that coming back to the tennis court after a span of
almost two months has not fully affected her playing form and she is happy about the fact.
