Wozniacki through as Wimbledon day two wraps up
Caroline Wozniacki has added her name to the winners list on day two at Wimbledon, and joins Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova among the players to move through to the second round in the ladies’ singles draw.
The third seed blitzed Tathiana Garbin 6-1, 6-1 in just 46 minutes to move through to the second round in eight minutes less than Sharapova, who won her opening match against Anastasia Pivovarova with the 6-1, 6-0.
It’s a confident start by the Dane, who lost her opening match at the Aegon International in Eastbourne last week after returning to the tournament as defending champion.
Serena opened the day on centre court with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Michelle Larcher De Brito and now looks to be on track to play in front of the Queen when she visits Wimbledon on Thursday.
It’s a prospect that will leave the defending champion with more to practice on her day off tomorrow than just her tennis, with Serena telling the media after today’s match that, “I'm definitely going to work on it [the curtsy] a little more. I'm trying to tone down my wrist action.”
The biggest upset of day two in the women’s draw came courtesy of Kaia Kanepi, who dumped French Open runner-up Sam Stosur out in SW19 in straight sets, while Svetlana Kuznetsova scraped to victory against 93rd ranked Akgul Amanmuradova after at one stage looking like she may become the first high profile casualty of the day.
