Wreckers’ captain Joosje Grevers becomes Most Valuable Player of the Year
The middle hitter and captain of the Staples High School girls’ volleyball team, Joosje Grevers, received the All-Area Girls Volleyball Most Valuable Player for 2011 this week.
The skipper of Staples High School volleyball team, commonly known as the Wreckers, worked out a great performance in the season and raised many eyebrows with their wonderful action on the net. Grevers stood out as the front row attacker for Wreckers and
helped the team to win many of the tough matches. The versatile player did equally well on the attack and defence side. At the end of 2011 season, she was credited with 155 kills and 25 blocks.
The Staples rounded off the regular season with an overall record of 18-4 and the success was mainly credited to Grevers’ wonderful feat in the shoes of captain. She helped the Wreckers to stay focused on the target and led them to the semi-finals of Fairfield
Country Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC). Likewise, the team clawed its way to the quarterfinals of Class LL State under Grevers’ captaincy.
Grevers gave out her season’s best performance at the biggest match of the regular season for the Wreckers, when they crossed their ways with the Blue Wave Volleyball team of Darien High School. The Staples entered the competition under the command of Grevers
and put up a valiant effort. Grevers finished with 15 service points along with 5 aces. Furthermore, she notched five kills, six digs, and a block in the match. However, the Wreckers could not win the match but their effort was commendable.
Jon Shepro, the Head Coach of Staples, complimented the brilliant captain of his team in the following manner.
He stated, “She knew by the time she became a senior, she could become a great player if she put in the work and she did that. She worked on every facet of her game, from passing, serving and hitting, and put in extra time for those things. She blossomed
as a volleyball player.”
On the other hand, Grevers gave all the credit to her mentor and teammates. She said she got a great support from her coach and players, in order to receive all the awards and honours in the season.
