Okay I have some question I need help with.

Okay I'm think of planning on joining MMA next year, so I was wondering sense wrestling in way the same as jiu jitsu, will wrestling help me be better at MMA??

(I'm also planning to join compentions in MMA)

Also do you need to be a "hard head"(like I need to be really "tough" and need to withstand anything) to be in MMA. Like the reason I want to join, because I have an interesting and I'm really fond with fighting out of the fun of it???

  1. I think what you're asking is what you're going to need to skills and attributes to succeed in MMA?

Wrestling is a big part of some fighters skill set. It helps you get great take downs as well as fantastic take down defense. Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is going to help you when on the ground; both on top and from your back. You are looking for submissions and chokes (to make your opponent "tap out"). You will need a great stand up game as well.....there are MANY stand up arts to choose from. Pick the one you like the best. Stay away from flashy arts and stick to the technical ones.

Do you need a hard head? Hmmm.....yes and no. Mentally hard? Totally. "Being able to take a punch hard"......it certainly helps! Since there really isn't anything you can do about how "hard" your head might be your best bet is to train your *** off to limit the strikes to your head while in the cage/ring!

Good luck with your quest......a fighters life isn't all it's cracked up to be. The guys who you're seeing on TV only represent a VERY small amount of us......but give it what you've got! Good luck

  2. Wrestling is not like Jujitsu. No you don't have to be tough to do MMA. They'll start you off easy. You don't really need to prep for MMA. MMA is just something to start of with. It's just bits and pieces of stuff. MMA doesn't make you anymore of a martial artist than you were before because you still don't know a martial art. It's just something to give you a very small edge. Take MMA for a while to get used to fighting and then think about moving on to a real martial art. You can go in with a little experience and learn how to fight for real. It's good to know a little bit of everything. Though I think it's better to know a lot of everything by taking the actual martial art and then taking another and another. Try taking several (real, whole, authentic) martial arts at a time. MMA is a mixture of Muay Thai, Boxing, BJJ, and maybe a few other things. Why not take the real Muay Thai, Boxing, and BJJ instead? It's up to you. Do you want to be the Jack of all trades, or the Master of all trades?

  3. wrestling is NOT like jujutsu.

mma is commonly a combination of boxing/kickboxing/muay thai. wrestling, and brazilian jujutsu (jiujitsu) and or/sambo. of course there are arts such as catch wrestling and shootfighting that also appear alot.

wrestling is greco roman..it is controlling the transition from standing to ground. it is controlling the "middle" ground. how to clinch, how to control, and how to prevent takedowns. bjj/sambo come in when its time to actually submit the opponent.

so if you learn mma, you likely will learn wrestling too.

    will it help...sure it will!

having a good chin is very helpful. lets face it...alot of guys get ko'd from having a glass jaw.

mma is basically learning to fight in 3 ranges.

    standup, clinch, and ground.

    standup= muay thai, boxing, kickboxing.

clinch=part muay thai, part wrestling, a little jujutsu.

ground= part wrestling and mostly brazilian jujutsu/sambo.

so you see where the ranges sort of blend together.

wrestling was a "strikers" saving grace!! before people discovered wrestling...grapplers always won....but then came wrestling and namely the "sprawl"....which nullified the takedown attempts of the grapplers.

  4. Wrestling is NOT the same as Jiu jitsu (did i read that right? if not sorry)

But wrestling has a HUGE part in MMA and can only boost your game. But don't become too dependent on wrestling that you forget about you Jits. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is also a big part of being a well rounded fighter. BJJ techniques are what can stop a fight.

  5. Funny when I talk to people who claim to know a lot about fighting, and reference jujitsu moves as "wrestling". This happens all the time when talking to random people.

I often get reminded that most people don't train and couldnt fight their way out of a paper bag.

  6. wrestling is the same as jj but it has certain restrictions to how you can hold a guy.  Because of the all the submissions in jj are illegal in greco roman (mostly) so you can do things in wrestling that will get you tapped out in jj.  That said years of learning how to apply new techniques and how to shift your weight are a good thing to have.

Its up to you how you adapt....some wrestler refuse to give up wrestling techniques for different jj techniques such as turning there back (If you do it in wrestling its a safe position if you do it in jj youll get tapped out automoatically).  A good instructor will understand your background and help you switch over.

You need a decently hard head but your instructor will start you out slow...if he threw you in the fire right away he wouldn't have any students cause no one wants to get beat up there first classes.
