  5. You don't need wrist flaps to surf.  All you need is your board and some decent waves.

I've heard of people using webbed gloves.  I've also heard that they don't add that much propulsion.  And, you'll get tired out faster by using them because of the added resistance.

If you want to have more propel energy when you paddle, work on upper body strength and form.  On flat days, take your board out and paddle up and down the beach for practice.  Wear a wetsuit and take your smallest board, this will add drag and make it harder to do, therefore getting a better workout.  Also, do push ups every night before bed.

Form and technique will also add extra power to your paddling.  When you paddle, try sweeping your hands slightly under your board.  Also, if you're paddling a slightly longer distance or need to get somewhere faster, I sometimes put my head down for a few seconds (kinda like touch your nose to the board) and really stroke hard.  Also, make sure you're not laying too far back on your board.  If you are, you will weigh yourself down and create drag, making it harder to paddle.  The nose of your board should be just skimming the surface.

Oh, and it kinda goes without mentioning, if you DO choose to wear any kind of webbed glove or wrist flap, you're gonna look like a kook and lose respect out in the water almost immediately.  I vote NO on the wrist flaps.
