How do you find out the ideal putter length for yourself?

If my wrist to floor measures 33" does that mean a 33" putter will fit me best?

  1. Molly this is a good question. The wrist to floor measurement is what is commonly used to find the shaft length of your irons. These measurements are very accurate and are a good starting point for you. If you are going to a golf emporium like Golf Galaxy or d**k's Sporting Goods or GolfSmith etc. start by going to your course and playing a round with your current putter. You want to play a full 18. Once you finish your round go to the putting green. Putt around and really try to work that green and make some long and short putts. Now you are ready. Go to the store and start putting around with their putters. The muscle-memory you recently engrained will still be there only you may find that a different putter suits your game, is easier to swing, looks better at address, gives you more confidence. This is how you select a putter. Unless you play every day you can't possibly walk into a store and make a sometimes $200+ decision. And yet, many do, and end up with putters that don't suit them at all. To answer your question a 33" putter might be the right putter for you  but if i had to guess I would tell you to start around 30-31 inches. 33 is your wrist to floor standing not bending so start at 30 and try them. Do that process though and you may find the best putter you ever bought. I've been golfing for 15+ years and I have owned three putters and the first two were the exact same putter only newer. I did that drill I just outlined to you and went and got a different one. Now I make a lot of one putts because the putter I got puts a great roll on the ball and has a different weight to it. In essence it is the same putter, looks the same at address, feels very similar, but is one inch longer and has a different face material. So two putts were in abundance with my old putter and that was good, but now I make more putts so there is something to be said for equipment change after all this time.

  2. Probably shorter....  I have 35" wrist to floor, I'm using 33" putter right now.   And it is the most accurate putter I ever had.

For putter,  try as many putter as your can when you are shopping.  You don't have to hit a ball, but  stand as if you are putting.   The head should be resting flat on the ground and not

    pointing up.

  3. Putter lengths are based on personal preference. Your stance, bending from the waist, standing up straight, setting in a crouch all are factors which must be used to determine the proper length of the putter. Watch 100  golfers putting and you will see 100 different looks. The main thing is to develop confidence in the club which will automatically make you a better putter. Develop a smooth stroke as well.

  4. It will provide you with a place to start.....Its more about what is a comfortable length for you.   Some folks prefer to stand more upright....some prefer to be really bent over....its a personal preferance thing.   There is no hard and fast rule or measurement on what will fit you best.

  5. Putter lengths are a personal preference and not measured by the same standard you would use for your irons and woods. Most everyone takes a similar stance with their irons and woods so fitting can be fairly standardized but everyone takes a different stance for putting. Some golfers stand more upright than others, some hunch over the ball and bend their elbows, some stand with an open stance ad some stand with a closed stance. Just try several putters until you find the putter the best fits your style of putting.
