  1. wife = wives

    hoof = hooves

    I agree with the first three respondents.


  2. Change the "f" to a "v" and ad "es."  That's the apparent rule.

  3. Words that end in (f) contain a voicesless fricative (friction) consonant, but when an (s) is added the fricative consonant becomes voiced or stronger so to keep the friction away add (ves).   This plural is irregular but it sounds so much better than calfs and leafs, etc.

  4. drop the f and add ves!!

  5. Change the F to a V and add ES
