Unnilquadium, element 104, was prepared by bombarding 249/98 Cf with 12/6 C nuclei in the Heavy Ion Linear Accelerator. Assuming that the product of the reaction had a mass number of 257, write an equation for the bombardment of the same target with 13/6 C to form a product of mass number 259.

  1. If Californium-249 is bombarded with Carbon-13 and yields

    Rf-259, three neutrons are emitted to conserve mass.

    The reaction equation is:

    98Cf249 + 6C13 → 104Rf259 + 3n0  (three neutrons are ejected)

    This way all nucleons are accounted for and mass is conserved.

    Edit:  I looked at a periodic chart and saw that the element

    with atomic number = 104 is called Rutherfordium, symbol

    Rf, so I changed the symbol in the equation above.

    However, the reaction and product will be the same.
