some steps to follow for a complex number in the form y= a+bi would be fine

  1. If y = a + bi, (cartesian form) then

    y = r (cos φ + i sin φ) (trig form),

    where

    r = √(a²+b²) (just like the pythagorean theorem)

    and

    φ = arctan(b/a) (φ ranges from -π to π radians).
