Question:

Writing a letter to get into the daycare I want to work in

Ok, here's the deal. I want to work at a daycare near were I live and I need to write a letter mentioning why I want to work there, how old I am, where I live, phone number, etc.

I love kids, and want to have a career in daycare business. I want to start somewhere so I thought volunteering would be the best place to start, so I asked them and they said I should look into working not volunteering (since I'm home schooled) and I said ok.

But the thing is, I'm only 15. I'm not sure if they think I look older (because I do) and they'll say no when they read my letter...

I'm extremely mature, and am responsible enough to take care of kids. I'm not like your average 15 year old girl.

What should I write in my letter? Examples? How to start it? What to expect? How much would I get paid? Can you please give me an idea of what I'm getting into (I know this is what I want, I just want to be positive). Be as detailed as possible, I really need some help!

People who own a daycare would be a great help also! If you cold drop me some tips and things that would be great.

  1. I'm afraid that they may have mistaken you for someone older.  Most child care centers have to abide by the law of "18 years old and a high school diploma or equivalent" unless they are in some sort of internship.  The reason the law about the age of 18 applies is the person has to be old enough to have a non juvenile background check.

Please do not take this as discouragement.  A career in Early Childhood Education can be extremely rewarding. I have been in the field for a few years now and wouldn't change ot for the world.  Write a letter describing your level of responsibility, the studies that you concentrated on during your homeschooling especially if they relate to business in anyway, and include any experience that you have with children even though it may only be with siblings.  Tell them in the letter what you think is rewarding about childcare and also tell them that while you would like them to consider you for employment, you also understand that there may be restrictions based on age and that you would be open to the possibility of either an internship or a volunteer position.

I hope that I was able to help with this

  3. The first thing that you need to do is make sure that they know how old you are.  At 15, even if you are homeschooled you are limited by your state's laws on employment of minors.

Next, write your letter and express your interest in having a career with children and that you would like to start gathering experience now.  Be as honest and open as possible.  The worst thing they can do is say no.

If you want to volunteer, check out organizations such as Big Brother/Big Sister, community programs that tutor children afterschool, being a counselor at a summer camp, etc.

Contact your local Red Cross or hospital.  In addition to offering babysitting courses which will be beneficial because it covers skills you will need, you can also take an infant/child CPR class which will be another benefit.  You can inquire about volunteering at the hospital as well-many larger hospitals have playrooms and a need for volunteers to read to and/or play with the patients.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best!
