Writing a postcard in Italian?

Ciao, my homework assignment was to write a postcard about my summer. I gave it my best shot and am putting it on here to make sure it's all correct. Thanks.

Quest'estate era molto bello. Prima di tutti io sono visitato mio cugino in Los Angeles. Mentre ero lì io sono andato al Museo di contemporaneo arte. Io sono veduto molti pezzi d'arte interessante. Anch'io sono andato al cena con mio zio e mia zia al "Cheesecake Factory". Il cibo era molto squisito. Io ho avuto il filetto mignon e un pezzo di bella torta al formaggio. Quando sono arrivato alla casa ero triste per partendo California. Ma ho saputo io ho avuto ancora altro mese fino a scuola comenciare. Io ho visitato alcuni amici in NYC e ho avuto pranzo con li. Mi piace la città. Per la maggior parte la mia vacanza era abbastanza divertente.

I haven't studied Italian since last year so I'm a little rusty. I'd appreciate if you could help me out with any mistakes.

In english I am trying to say:

This summer was very good. First I visited my cousin in Los Angeles. While I was there I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art. I saw many interesting pieces of art. I also went to dinner with my uncle and aunt at the Cheesecake Factory. The food was very delecious. I had the filet mignon and a piece of fantastic cheesecake. When I arrived home I was sad for leaving California. But I knew I still had another month until school begins. I visited some friends in NYC and had lunch with them. I love the city. For the most part my summer (vacation) was quite enjoyable.

"L'estate è andata molto bene. Innanzi tutto ho fatto visita a mio cugino a Los Angeles. Mentre ero lì, sono andata al Museo di Arte Contemporanea. Ho visto molti oggetti d'arte interessanti. Sono anche andata a cena con mio zio e mia zia alla "Cheesecake Factory" (or alla Fabbrica del Formaggio). Il cibo era squisito. Ho preso un filetto mignon ed un pezzo di una fantastica torta al formaggio. Quando sono arrivata alla casa ero triste per aver lasciato la California. Ma sapevo di avere ancora un altro mese prima dell'inizio della scuola. Ho visitato alcuni amici a NYC (better: New York City) ed ho pranzato con loro. Adoro questa città. Per la maggior parte le mie vacanze sono state abbastanza divertenti.

My text is in perfect Italian, as I would have written it. But you're was quite good and I could understand almost everything (without reading the English translation).

Suggests:

- don't write/say IO in every sentence. In Italian, you can understand the person you are talking about thanks to the verb. It's not wrong if you write it, but no one would say it in Italy

- I correct some of the verbs... don't worry, I understand it's very difficult to find out the correct form/time to use. You will understand by yourself in future

- verb visitare/vedere, auxiliary verb is "avere". I visit=io visito; I visited=io ho visitato. I see=io vedo; I saw=io ho visto (not "veduto")

- in English: I visited my cousin IN L.A.; in Italian: Ho fatto visita a mio cugino A L.A. We use "visitare" when you visit a city-monument-place and "fare visita" when you visit someone. The correct preposition in A (it means you met your cousin in L.A.)

- I suppose you are a girl, so the participles end with letter A (andata, arrivata)

- art is feminine in Italian, so the adjective is contemporeneA

- pieces is plural; so the adjective is "interessantI"

- Squisito means "very good", you can't say "molto squisito"

- to leave=partire/lasciare, they don't have the same meaning in Italian. In this sentence you must use "lasciare"

- them=loro

- vacation=vacanza, but it's better to use plural in this sentence.

A few corrections:

Quest'estate era molto bello. Prima di TUTTO io sono ANDATO A VISITARE ("visitare" used by itself is for when doctors make house calls) mio cugino A Los Angeles. Mentre ero lì io sono andato al Museo di ARTE CONTEMPORANEA. Io HO veduto molti pezzi d'arte INTERESSANTI (the pieces are "interestings"). Anch'io sono andato A cena con mio zio e mia zia al "Cheescake Factory." Il cibo era molto squisito. Io ho avuto il filetto mignon e un pezzo di bella torta al formaggio. Quando sono arrivato A casa ero triste DI ESSER PARTITO DA California. Ma SAPEVO DI AVERE ancora UN altro mese PRIMA DI COMINCIARE LA SCUOLA. Io SONO ANDATO A VISITARE (again, "visitare" alone is for doctors) alcuni animi A NYC e ho avuto pranzo con LORO. Mi piace la città. Per la maggior parte la mia vacanza era abbastanza divertente.

Ahem... kelly, correct me if I'm wrong, but Sarah is a Lady, and you used the masculine form: "sono andatO", etc :-)

Il cibo era molto squisito ["assai squisito" sounds way better]. Io ho preso il filetto mignon e un pezzo di un'eccezionale torta al formaggio. Quando sono tornata a casa ero triste per aver lasciato la California. Ma sapevo che mancava ancora un altro mese prima dell'inizio della scuola. Ho fatto visita ad alcuni amici in NYC e pranzato con loro. Mi piace la città. Per la maggior parte la mia vacanza è stata abbastanza divertente.

A little explanation about "visitare" and "fare visita": visitare is more used when, for instance, visiting a place (a museum, a city) while for a person is better "fare visita" or even "andare a trovare"; "visitare" referring to a person can make think more about a doctor seeing a person ("visitare" also have that meaning)

Kelly has already corrected the major stuff; here are just some things to keep in mind:

--Estate is feminine, so you should say "molto bellA"

--**You are a girl, so when you conjugate a verb with "essere" you have to make the past participle feminine:

"sono andatA"

"essere partitA"

--Usually you say "a + city" instead of "in + city":

[a Los Angeles]

[a New York City]

--The verb "vedere" is conjugated with "avere" and its participle is sometimes irregular (visto):

[Ho visto/veduto molti...]

--In Italian, they don't really say "I had + something to eat" with the verb "avere"; instead you should say:

"Ho mangiato..." or

"Ho preso..."

--When you say "have lunch/dinner" there are separate verbs that express those ideas (like "dine" in English):  

[Ho cenato... = I had dinner...]
