Writing a resume?

Okay, so what can an almost 2nd year college student who has only had a job or two put on a resume? I am trying to get a job so that I can get my work-study financial aid for next year. I honestly have never had to write a resume before.

  1. Resumes can include various information to show not only your skills and job history, but a little about you as well.  Your resume does not need to be lengthy, as employers spend less than 45 seconds reviewing them.  Crisp, clean and to the point.

List your job history, and the skills you utilized and obtained during your stay with those companies.

List specifically your skillsets that you may not have been able to utilize for those jobs (Software knowledge, data entry, book keeping, etc)

List any volunteer work you may have done, any organizations, clubs or groups you may belong to, or have belonged to.

And if you really need a filler, sometimes, it is beneficial to list a few of your hobbies and interests.  This has 2 benefits.  Believe it or not, should an employer see a hobby or interest they share, it could be a nudge up the candidacy scale.  Also, in an interview, it gives the employer a chance to implement an icebreaker, and find out a little about you personally.

Good Luck and I hope this helps!

  2. Best way i have found to write a resume is to copy others. Search for the type of job you're looking for go to yahoo or deja.com

search for "resume doctor" "resume machinist" "resume programmer" etc.

Take a few peoples resume and make a hybrid of your own.Later down the road when you want to start applying for "high end" jobs it would be worth paying someone that writes them for a living to make a professional one for you.

Your statement about getting a job so you can get work study and financial aid for next year isn't right.

Are you in the U.S ? If so the more your work the less likely you will get aid and work studies. Even if your do work this year your aid for next year  (this coming fall) Will use your income tax information from last year. So it will not effect you for another year&3/4.

I don't want to put you off from working but I just want you to understand that if you work to much it will start being counter productive. There is a point where you can get the most out of school, grants and work. In most cases that works out to a part time job around 10k year.
