Writing for the entertainment industry

What is the "typical" avenue that a future screen writer must navigate? College, meet someone, that someone knows someone, yada yada yada?? Thanks for any help!

write for comics. movies are moving aggressively to the comic medium because they come with built in audiences, the format of a comic already has set designs, costumes designs, and scene by scene storyboard outlines. just look at how many movies have been based off comics lately: 300, FROM h**l, DOG SOLDIERS, THE MATRIX, BLADE, all the XMEN movies, BATMAN, SUPERMAN RETURNS, FANTASTIC FOUR, HELLBOY, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, etc...
