Question:

Writing stuff down vs. typing it on the computer?

I've noticed that even though I type faster than I write, when I really want to concentrate on something, I need to grab the old fashioned pen and paper. Why is that? Thanks.

Another question along the same line is: Why do I pull my hair up on top of my head when I need to concentrate? If it's down, it seems like I can't think as well.

  1. I think because when you type on the computer, it seems so "finalized." It feels like you have to get it "perfect" somehow... But on paper, you can cross things out as much as you want, so there's isn't that immediate sense of urgency.

And about the hair thing: Maybe when your hair is down, it distracts you, by getting in your face. Actually, it doesn't have to get in your face, just seeing your hair hanging down might distract you!

  2. It's an actual proven theory that writing your thoughts on paper is actually therapeutic. Keeping a journal, for example, is best written in your own handwriting. It is much more personal and you can present your thoughts as they come, rather than 'making it perfect' on a computer or typewriter. Even though I can type fast too, I still prefer writing my thoughts, as they feel like a more private way to express what I'm feeling.

My psychiatrist and my behavioural therapist both encourage me to keep a journal "in handwritten form". If computers had never had invented, they suggest, how would you be able to keep a journal? It was a good point.....

As for pulling your hair up? I have no idea. Does it make you feel smarter? If so, I'm outta luck. I can't pull mine up at all - it's too short LOL.

  3. Writing is easier because you have more control over what is being written, since you can precisely manipulate the marks you make on the paper.  When you're typing you have to first convert your thoughts to movements of fingers on a keyboard, which is non-intuitive.  But writing it on paper allows you to put your thoughts pretty much directly onto the paper the way you imagine it in your mind.

I also find it easier to write, mainly because I work on physics and it is much more time consuming to write mathematical equations on the computer than to just write it on paper.

  4. I love this question!

I write when I need to let it all out. I can express myself in every possible way. Although, when I need to write a paper for class, I HAVE to type. I can't write because I loose my inspiration because I can't write that fast. But when the writing is to express MY feelings, I need a pencil and paper. Not pen. I don't like pen for some reason.

And I always put my hair up when I need to concentrate too! Don't you just love how we all think! It's so interesting!
