Written test drivers lisense?

When people talk about the written part of getting your license,

that's not the test you take for your temporary license is it?

Is it another test you take when you're going to get you're actual license?

I know it sounds like a stupid question, even more stupid considering I'm 18 and don't have my license. (I do have my temps though!)

I live in ohio if that makes a difference.

  1. Generally the written part is used for getting your learners permit.  It can sometimes be used if you were already licensed in one state and moved to a different state.  Sometimes a written test is used for renewal in some states, too.

Usually to get a license your first time, after you have a learners permit and practiced a certain number of required hours and held your permit for a certain length of time (varies by state), you must take a hands on type behind-the-wheel driving test.  Once you pass this, they will usually give you your license.  In some states and countries, there is something called "graduated licensing" in which you may have a passenger restriction and/or nighttime driving restricition for a certain number of months to a year after you first get your license.  Often this applies to teenagers, but in some areas it applies to all younger drivers.
