  1. Size is the main difference.  Shetland sheep dogs are much smaller than any collie!

There are 2 different types of Collies also.  Smooth & Rough Coated Collies.  Both Have very different looks too.  All are heavy sheders.

They are all herding/working dogs.  The do best if they have a job to do.  Like Agility but they all make wonderful pets too.

I think shetland sheep dog tend to be a bit more human friendly, they are said to be velcro dogs.  Love to be with their owners.

My Aunt bred and showed her Rough coated Collies and I found them to be a bit more aloof.

    Hope this helps.

  2. What breed of Collie? I'm guessing you mean Rough Collie?

There is the Bearded and Border Collie, also.

Anyway, the main difference is the size. Shelties are much smaller.

    Shetland Sheepdog:

    Height:  13-16 inches

    Weight: 14-27 pounds (6.4-12.3 kg)

    Rough Collie:

    Height: 22-26 inches

    Weight: 50-75 pounds (23-34kg)

There is a difference in the way they look, also.

  3. Having owned both, size is the main difference, and of the dogs I have known, I would say that Collies have a calmer temperment.  I own Shelties and they are smart, and easy to train, but these days you really need a great breeder.  The breed is becoming larger in height, and length and weight, and they are becoming a more nervous and skiddish breed overall.  I choose the Sheltie because they are smaller, but the Collie has a better temperment.

  4. quick glaring difference - sheltie (shetland sheepdog) is much smaller

  5. Even though they look the same, shetland sheepdogs are a lot smaller than collies.Shelties are almost the same in character as collies, but they are a bit more friendlier and more faster in speed. They make good watch dogs,as they bark at the sight of strangers, but do not make good guard dogs as they are either to shy,or too friendly.Hope this is what you are looking for.

  6. There's is a lot bigger differance than just size, there is a reason they are called shelties and not miniature collies. Although they bare a striking resemblance. Shelties stand 13-16 inches at the shoulders while collies are are up to 26 inches.

The difference in breeds come from the fact that the sheltie was not just bred down in size from collies it was cross bred with several toy breeds to achieve its smaller size. While it retained its herding instincts it also picked up the characteristics of its many toy bred ancestors.

-Shelties have a lower energy level than collies and many are satisfied with a couple brisk walks a day. They do not however make good apartment companions unless there is someone at home with them as they can be very yappy. They are good watchdogs and get along well with children if properly introduced. Smart dogs that take well to training and often compete at agility

-Collies energy needs are higher than that of a sheltie. They have a lot more coat to care for. They really love a job to do, agility, obediance, rally-o, carting, tracking, or herding. They are smart dogs that need a gentle hand in training and dont like repetition. They have even stable temperaments and are very loyal. They are good in any size space as long as their exercise needs are met.  They are prone to a few health issues such as hip dyspacia, collie eye, and epilepsy.

  7. I think that collies are bigger than shetland sheepdogs and the shetlands are thinner and faster than the collies.

  8. Size is a main difference.  But keep in mind that a badly bred Sheltie, or a pet bred Sheltie, can be the size of a Collie and looked just like one.  And vice-versa, a Collie can be smaller too.  The REAL MAIN DIFFERENCE, is a Sheltie has a defined stop (the space between their eyes). Meaning if you google a picture of a "Show Sheltie" there should be a little indent on the bridge of the nose right below the corner of their eyes.  A Collie will not have this indent and the bridge of the nose will run smoothly with no indent right into the stop.  Collies are also longer in proportion.  But at a distance that is how you can tell the difference.

  9. i would tend to agree with poster 2.

    i own a sheltie and a cavoodle.

the sheltie is very people oriented. or was until the new pup came along.

theres oh so many collies. theres border collies, bearded collies scotch collies (lassie) to name them.

    I guess you mean scotch.

size and a few physical differences are pretty much it. shelties are descended from the scotch collie.
