  1. Sometimes, when the ball hits the ground it spins away in a particular direction.

    In cricket the directions are not 'left' and 'right' but rather, 'off' and 'leg' ('leg' is also known as 'on'). The batsman's toes point in the direction of the 'off' side. The opposite side is the 'leg' side.

    Assume that the batsman is right-handed. A ball that spins from off to leg is an off-spin. A bowler that bowls off-spin is an off-spinner. A ball that spins from leg to off is an leg-spin. A bowler that bowls leg-spin is a leg spinner.
