No, it's Congress . . .

Broadcasters wanted a newer, better system.  The original reason for Congress back in the mid 1990s was to move all the TV stations closer together into a smaller segment of spectrum so the government could auction off the freed up portions of spectrum for profit.  Digital gave them a way to do that.  Digital is also a more modern system with better performance and features.  They are doing the same thing with the microwave bands but that doesn't get the public's attention.

The Public Safety argument didn't come up until after 9/11.  Public Safety is a very good use for a part of the spectrum, but the DTV transition had already been in motion for years before that . . .  http://www.dtvcoalition.com/images/media...

actually the reason for this is that they want to use the radio frequencies for law enforcement and ambulances etc that were previously used for over the air transmissions (FREE TV)...so your tv  WILL STILL WORK but you have to get the Digital-2-Analog converter box, its been on tv everywhere for quite some time now, if you have cable or subscribe to dish or anything of the sort you will not be affected by this...you can apply for TWO 40 dollar coupons online per household at:
