Wu Joe stuns Blondel Nicolas in Men’s Singles tie of 2013 Sudirman Cup – Badminton news
Men’s Singles campaigner Wu Joe of New Zealand displayed unbeatable craft on court and claimed a vital point for his team in Level 3 match of Sudirman Cup on Friday, May 24, 2013.
He was up against a relatively experienced player Blondel Nicolas of Switzerland and he took just 36 minutes to wrap this showdown in a favourable manner. However, he had to play three gruelling sets to read the decisive figures of 16-21, 21-15 and 21-5.
Although the inexperienced contender Joe lost the first set of match, yet he showed great maturity in his craft in the ending two games and sealed a splendid victory. On the other hand, the Swiss campaigner failed to make best out of his initial advantage
and lost a vital match point.
The battle heated up when Blondel Nicolas unleashed a flurry of masterly crafted strokes and confounded his opponent by claiming few valuable points in a row. He kept on moving forward at steady pace and piled up a mountainous figure of 11.
After the mid-game break, Joe showed some class and brought life back into the contest. He added few back-to-back points in his total and it was felt that he will sweep the table with a significant lead. However, few ill-timed mistakes jeopardised his stakes
and he lost this set with 16-21 margin.
The second set of match brought some good news for Kiwi badminton lovers as Joe stormed back with a strong reply and levelled the match score.
This time he did not repeat previous mistakes and played with an aggressive approach. He established a decent advantage immediately in the beginning and enjoyed an upper hand all the way to game point situation.
He registered a winning figure of 21- 15 and moved to a nerve-racking decider. His stunning performance in the second set proved a real booster for him as he completely dominated his competitor in next game.
Joe maintained an unassailable lead of 16 points and won this encounter with 21-5 total on the board. However, his victory did not leave any impact on the match score position and New Zealand lost this crucial tie with 2-3 margin.
