  1. I would avoid travelling on the metro with too much luggage because of the long corridors and stairs between stations.

However, if you feel this is the only option, try travelling outside the rush hour "les heures de point". 0730-0930 & 1600-1900.

  2. If you don't want to spend too much money, you can also take a bus: the 39 to Balard, and then the tramway from Balard to Porte de Versailles (it stops just there) and the tramway at Balard is just next to the bus stop.

  3. It depends how much luggage you have, and if you don't mind carrying it up and down stairs. We took the Metro from Gare du Nord to the Nation station. We made it, but at times it was tricky hauling big wheeled suitcases when changing lines. Travelling with luggage on the Metro isn't bad at all. I wouldn't recommend trying to do it during morning or evening rush hour, though -- there are just TONS of people at those times.

I would still do it again, though -- Paris taxis are expensive.

  4. Traveling on the Metro with a lot of luggage will be an object lesson in the virtues of traveling light.

You are likely to be better off taking a taxi. The road distance between Gare de l'Est and the Porte de Versailles Exhibition center is about 16 km. The daytime rate for taxis is .77 euros per km and a starting charge of 2 euros. There is an additonal charge for each bag of 1 euro. So the entire trip should be less than 20 euros.

Its probably worth saving the aggravation of the metro and taking the taxi.
