my son had an mri knee which was normal-basically that was the end of his appointments as nothing further was done.

not necessarily, you would probably be referred for physio anyway to try to ease your symptoms.

It depends what the medics think is wrong with your knee. MRI is just one clinical test, they may perform other tests or they may decide nothing is wrong.

MRI is just a test. You don't "treat the test". A negative MRI may just rule out some of the causes of your problem, not all.

If the doctor says he doesn't know where to go from here, ask for a referral to someone who might.
