  1. My mom is from taiwan too! my dad is american. the last time i went was also when i was 13, (I'm now 17) i might go next summer. Anyways, i'm pretty sure short shorts are actually acceptable, but however, i'm 5'3 and 115 pounds and people apparently think i'm chubby.. so i never really wore those shorts that i brought becasue my cousins' fat jokes made me too self consious. don't bother packing clothes like jackets because trust me, it's too hot and they will just be weighing your luggage down (well, you may want to bring just a very light one in case you end up indoors where its colder? probably a thin rain jacket because it will also work well for when it rains because the weather is pretty unpredictable but it is NEVER cold outside. ever.). you may want to bring something like a spay bottle just in case. i thought it was stupid, but once you get outside of the airport the heat feels overwhelming and it really does help. Dont' wear clothes that are too skimpy in rural areas becasue guys you don't want checking you out WILL be checking you out. Once you get to Taipei or some other big city, it's okay. HAVE FUN on your trip. you are so lucky to be going it's such an amazing, beautiful place. if it's the first time you are going you are going to love it. ps: look out for the cars because people there are not nearly as careful drivers as in America. Pretty much every time i got on the road i saw a major car accident. be careful!

*another thing, don't worry about the heat. you get used to it after a few days. it may make you lose your appetite a little bit. i lost about 5 pounds in the first two weeks. you also lose water fast though, so bring a metal water bottle. plastic bottles combined with the heat will make your water taste awful. look out for poisonous insects, SPIDERS (there huge there) and snakes (plenty poisonous to kill you, esp. on the mountains.) especially ifyou are staying in a rural area.

  2. shorts and tank top or shorts and short sleeve shirts. I think the shorts that you wear everyday here are fine. My friend is in Taiwan right now visiting and that is what she wears most of the time.

and dont forget to stay hydrated.

  3. Get light nylon breathable loose pants (running pants that feel light to you). Believe it or not, you may feel more comfortable as long pants will protect your skin from the sun's radiation and damaging effects it has on your skin here. Light long and short skirts are quite normal but if you are riding around on a scooter they can be more problematic. If you wear short shorts and skirts alot you will need a lot of expensive greasy Sunscreen, or you can get 2nd degree burns if you are outdoors alot, just from the sun's intensity. Clothes are important, covering up isnt just to be prudish.

Avoid wearing halter tops. It isn't yet a normal thing here. Tank tops appear regularly so all is not lost, but usually they use either a small t-shirt underneath or at least a bra. Popping out isn't recommended either. T shirts are also acceptable but you may want to get a lighter locally made one, as the T shirts in N. America can sometimes be a thicker weave which gets uncomfortable and hot quickly here.

Bring a big hat that has a wide brim. Many taiwanese women use umbrellas to shade themselves, but that can be annoying to carry around.

from what I see in Taiwan, short shorts are VERY acceptable to the majority of young women. But if your cheeks are poking out, that is frowned upon. No butt smiles or undies showing. That would be tacky. If your butt area is covered, generally legs are acceptable to show here. Of course your mother may feel differently as she is your mother.

Chances are you will be fine.

  4. Matt gave a great answer to this.  I'd also like to add you might want to bring a dictionary.  Many people here won't know what "wut," "r not," or other similar words mean.  You might need to use the correct English word. ;-)

    Matt

  5. Just bring those short shirts. but you have to watch out for mosquitos. I think your mom told you not to bring it because guys might look at you....

anyways, just bring short sleeves, shorts, hat, sunscreen. But also bring some light jacket, light pants and shirt as it is typhoon season now and it can get pretty chilly.

just bring what you normally wear in the summer

    have fun

    :]

  6. Shorts are okay, as long as they're not "bootie" shorts.  How about a dress, that way you can keep cool and a dress is always appropriate!!  Taiwan is very modern and actully very fashionly foward, as long as it's  not over the top, it will be acceptable. Don't worry too much :)

  7. short shorts are not unacceptable!!! people wear them all the time in taiwan. i know cuz i've been wearing them for weeks now :D
