  1. Start correspondence courses now. You still have awhile before you go up for your E-5 so I don't know why your so worried about points right now. Work on PT, if you have a high PT score you'll get more commanders points  when you go to the board. If you make E-4  before you go to Iraq or are being considered for promotion to SGT/CPL try and get them to send you to WLC because that's worth points as well. other than that volunteer for schools and try to win awards because they are worth points too.

  2. By far, other than your performance reports

Education is the largest source of promotion points.

You can take corespondance courses ( military related )

Clep test, online class's and actual class's.

Go to the link below, it explains the Army promotion system and how points are calculated.

  3. You need to take the online army correspondence courses. They are short and very easy. There are tons to pick from and it is a VERY easy way to get promotion points. Here is the website:

  4. One generally receives promotion points in the following areas:  Military Education, civilian education, awards and decorations and commander's evaluation.  You have no control over Awards and decorations but you do have some flexibility in the others.  It is my recommendation that you gain as many points in the Mil Ed and Civ Ed area.  These are really the only two you have any control over.  However by trying to further your education you show your commander that you are a go getter and trying to improve yourself which might just mean a favorable Commander's Eval.  Also things like PT test score, rifle qualification and job performance can contribute to one degree or another.  Well you asked and that's what I can remember about my days of sweating promotion points.  Oh remember the Board is worth 250 points so work on your study guide as well.  Good luck to you.

  5. Just stay out of trouble, and E-4 is pretty much guaranteed without doing anything, but you can start now with earning points towards your E-5. Take advantage of any additional military training or classes offered, take correspondence courses, enroll in college, score higher on your PT tests, and earn more awards. All are worth promotion points.
